The movie "Blood Diamond"

Saw this on AMC the other day, well, I came in late, was interested but had to leave so I got the DVD from the library. Came out in '07, I barely remember hearing about it. It was quite good I thought. Some of it is implausible, one shoot out scene especially just would not have worked the way they portrayed it.

But it did for me what I think a good movie should do, helps one to more vividly consider what this or that piece of reality might actually be like. One reads about child soldiers and blood diamonds but this flick sort of drove some of the weird horror of that scene home for me.

Leonardo DiCaprio was surprisingly good in this I thought and Jennifer Connelly is an intelligent babe, my favorite type. This scene was pretty wild. They just made it out of some city in Sierra Leone that rebels had taken over and were trying to get to safety:

Great movie. Own a copy myself, Jennifer Connely is one of those rare women who gets more attractive the older she is.

I thought Leo did a remarkable job. I liked his Randolph sunglasses, too.

I was told those were his own sunglasses and not a prop.

I wouldn't have thought he would be that good at portraying a mercenary/diamond smuggler.

It really got me to thinking about what it would be like to be in a lawless zone like that with virtually insane warlords holding large sway over the countryside. We take a lot of our civilization for granted methinks.

Good movie, time to see it again

That movie reinforced my idea that whoever I propose to is not getting a diamond, and they will have to accept that.

you can get a certified conflict free diamond if need be. My brother in law and sister ordered one off the internet with paperwork showing origin and such

I saw the film when it came out, being as I'm from that part of the world (not Sierra Leone - further south) and he was supposedly portraying a South African/Rhodisian I was curious to how he'd manage it.

He did well as it turned out. And the film was better than I expected. There was a scene with a sort of long haired hippy looking photographer dude who had the hots for Jenniffer. DiCapprio finishes up by telling him to keep it in his pants or something to that effect.

I remember thinking that guy could have fit perfectly in the newsroom of the Newspaper company where I worked many years ago.

It had some great moments.

SPOILER ALERT: if you've not seen it and want to, stop reading!

That scene where he discovers her typing about Solomon shaking the fence at the refugee camp was wild. She said something like:

"I need someone to go on record, but since you're really not going to help me, and we're really not going to screw, get the F out of my face and let me do my work."

That scene towards the end where they're digging up the diamond and Leo and Solo get the jump on the guys and ventilate all of them was poorly done. There were two other guys with AKs trained on them that would have had plenty of time to put an end to that. Oh well, got to suspend disbelief, it's only a movie.

Oh man, I keep thinking that there's probably an undiscovered ancient volcano vent somewhere with beau coup diamonds in its walls like the one discovered in Canada some years back.

It's a bit painful to think of all the diamonds many miles underground at this moment. That and the small swimming pool (maybe really large swimming pool) of molten gold at the earth's core, hot as hell and under enormous pressure.
