Patriotism: What is it ?

Candidly I could never get my head around the concept.

Reluctant hero, drafted again
each Fourth of July,
I'll bow and remember you.
Who shall we follow next?
Who shall we kill
next time?

You feel no particular affection for your country? No wonder you can't get your head around it.

More clearly

It seems that being a global citizen is better than being a national citizen.
Loyalty to mankind is better than loyalty to a nation.

The desire to uphold, defend assist mankind is better than the desire to do the same for one country.

The latter means that some, or many countries , and their citizens must be kept down in order that one can stay on top.

How admirably cosmopolitan of you! What a wonderful thing, to believe so strongly in the intangible. God is on your side.

A real patriot; like a lady, doesn't need to loudly convince everyone who they are.

A necessary tool of the ruling class to get the working class to kill and die for them.

Everything is a tool of class warfare. The peasants in the French Revolution were patriots.

A man once said - ' What we believe is irrelevant to the truth, and on a personal level all truth is relative'.

I have found most americans to be least likely to accept truth counter to their belief paradigm.

Interesting that an ex-pat questions patriotism. That's like margarine questioning what butter is.

How is it mine ?

I do not feel that by simply being born in a particular place one needs to stay there their entire life simply because of some fondness they feel for that place.

If that were the case the United States certainly would not be what it is today.

Travel outside of the USA for more than 1-2 weeks..(staying at some resort where people are paid to be nice to you don't count-seeing ports from the deck of a military ship don't count)...

Live abroad for over 3 years-then get back to me.

As of right now, you have no credibility in my book. Only a narrow view of what you think the world is. Was it you that referred to as Asian's 'Oriental's'.?

I would imagine that you consider yourself to be a Patriot .
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Don't you hate it when it backfires on you?

Been there, done that. I spent 12 months in Iraq. It did not increase my esteem for the nation or people of Iraq, but it did make me appreciate America more. I also spent 7 months in Afghanistan and while I can say that I like the way Afghans drive, the country overall did not impress me in a positive way. I was pretty happy to get back to America. I enjoyed the two months I spent in Okinawa and wouldn't mind going back for another visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Same for the Philippines. Are there countries that are better (from my perspective) to live in than the U.S.? Maybe. I've heard good things about Germany and New Zealand, but I have no plans on bailing just yet.

Define irony...start with knowing what a Permanent Resident is. That is my classification abroad.

So when cornered, you resort to some vague backfire retort. My assessment of you stands. You consider yourself a Patriot. Correct me if I am wrong.
