Thought I was going to bed early... oh no.

So I went to bed right a little after ten, thinking I'd get some solid sleep. I couldn't fall asleep very easily and was sort of groggy but thought of something I'd like to write down.I came downstairs for a paper and pencil. While happening to pass through the kitchen, I noticed a flame in one of the burners.

Holy cow! Someone had forgotten to turn it off -- and there was something on it! There was a little bit of something on he bottom, and it was thoroughly burned on... since I figured that it would be easiest to clean while still "fresh", I settled in to clean it. After a half-hour of baking soda and Ivory, it now looks better than before something burned onto it . Maybe this will count as a mother's-day present .

The time is 12:33. Do you know if your burners are on? Bernie and Phyl's Furniture cares.

...so for future reference, do you guys have any tips for removing burned stuff from pans?

Soaking in vinegar and mechanical scrubbing before finishing off in the dishwasher

depends on the pan. A vinegar boil will often work, followed by a good scrubbing, or an overnight soak with Dawn or simple green.

In order, from least destructive to most.

Dish soap

Comet

Copper scrub. Make sure it's 100% copper, not copper coated steel.

Steel wool.

Pumice stone.

NEVER use any of these abrasive methods on your mother's pans without permission. NEVER use it with anodized aluminum.

is the pan teflon coated?

I got rid of almost all of those in my house, especially when the lesser expensive ones start to delaminate, or even the expensive ones start to have surface damage from scrubbing or tools. Not something I like having come off in my food.

All we use now is classic cured cast iron. A quick rinse, a fresh oiling after every use, and the things are more non stick than the teflon coated stuff. Plus we got a bunch out of a flea market, the wife gets a kick out of cooking on probably 100 year old iron pans

It's almost all I use. Almost. Not so good for acidic foods. Stainless steel for those applications.
There are some new ceramic non-stick technologies that are inert and PTFE free. Not quite as non-stick as the junky teflon pans but nearly so.
