Mercedes W123s in recycle/upull-it/scrap yards
Awhile back, someone posted links to various Mercedes recycler/upull-it/scrap yards. I remember various photos of good to excellent++ condition mercedes with lots and lots of nice parts just waiting to be recycled. Does anyone remember the link/post?

When and if the site is found or created it is wise to remember that these yards work on a three month cycle. After three months on the yard it is crushed out.
Several yard owners have told me they work on a two year cycle as they wish to sell every part they can before crushing. U pull it yards pay just above scrap metal prices for their cars and when they sell them crushed usually break even on the purchase and handling price. At least that is the plan. Anything they sell in the yard is their profit, but they depend on turnover and self service. I am sure you are aware, as would be most of us here, that service is the last thing these yards offer. You sometimes see such post here on Pelican in the Vintage section. |

I'm aware that these yards offer little to no service; I've never been afraid of taking a tool box and pulling parts for fun! I think that if a PNP made the decision to step up their game, i.e. place photos and descriptions on an easy to navigate web site, their sales would increase dramatically. But, that's just my two cents......

I would have drove down in a Silverado to Kentucky if I would have seen this in 2006.

whoever it is as a group who sends perfectly good 123 chassis to yards are starting to dry up. those left around are the ones owned by enthusiasts instead, certainly this is locally true, and will eventually be true for the rest of the country. parts have to be sourced from other enthusiasts these days for me, or buying a whole parts car.
ive always wondered who the people are who send a good car with no obvious issues off to a yard instead of selling it or stripping it. you know when an enthusiast sent something to the yard, there are no useful parts left, and straight to the crusher it goes

It could be that the photos were scaring people away after they saw the condition of the cars but I am just like you in that I would enjoy a quick look before making the trip. Years ago I had to source used parts if I wanted to drive a Mercedes. Now I do it because I want to and because it is no fun to deal with the dealers parts desks. I also find that tearing apart old Mercedes helps me to better understand how they work. But I would like to put in a plug for Park Place Mercedes in Dallas. I have never walked in there looking for a part, no matter how weird or old, that they were unable to as least know something about. And many times they either have it in stock or can get it overnight from Germany. |
