Don't sail into high tension wires

Wareham Harbor. Nice trimaran hit some wires. Two sailors survived. Boat didn't.

Holy cow! Good thing they made it...

Wareham Harbor -- is that in Wareham, MA?

kerry 05-24-2014 10:02 PM

Yes.

Mölyapina 05-24-2014 10:14 PM

So about how much does one of those cost? Would they have had insurance on it?

Hatterasguy 05-24-2014 10:22 PM

That will do it. Lightening is cool as well, I have seen a number of boats struck.

kerry 05-24-2014 10:22 PM

I'm not sure what model it is. Maybe a 28 or 31. Around $100k I think.

Did it burn for awhile after being stuck or was this all instantaneous? If the latter, amazing they survived.

Small fire initially according to this report:

Seems like a hazard to have high tension wires over a waterway and not too high. I mean those masts couldn't have been all that high.

Exactly. Who'd expect them over water?

The video (link, post #8) shows them hanging over the mouth of a river, looping down sort of low. I guess power lines will cross rivers and frequently but something seems off here.

I bet the captain of that raghauler was happy to see all of those stinkpots come to help.

51 ft clearance according to someone who looked at a chart. It was a very high tide. Perhaps that played a role.

Hatterasguy 05-25-2014 08:33 PM

Depending on the voltage carried the lines could arc if the mast gets close.

kerry 05-25-2014 08:36 PM

Mast height on an F-31 is a hair over 47'.
