Porsche 912

A friend of my father asked me today if I was interested in buying his Porsche 912. He has a few Porsches and this is the one he gives the least attention. 1968, original a European market car. Black on black. Interior nicely redone. Repaint is old and was not a bare metal respray. Spider webbing and chips. Fuchs wheels. He rebuilt the motor himself except for the machining. belly pans and underbody are very solid. No rust to be found or undercoating that could cover that up.

The only reason for selling is for more room in the garage as he's getting more passionate for motorcycles. He offered it to me for $6000... My instinct was to "make it rain", but decided to sleep on it.

Anyone with experience? Thoughts?

I wouldn't be interested in it at half that number. They were dogs anyway if I recall correctly. There was a prof at Wayne State that had one in 1970 - it was a poor man's 911. I'd see if I could forge a deal brokering it for a fee/commission.

Interesting. The first-gen 912 was more of the spiritual successor to the 356C than the 6-cylinder 911. 1968 was the last year of the short-wheelbase 911/912s. Think he would be offended if you asked to have a compression/leakdown test performed on the engine? Can you live with the current paint? Less than 100 hp from the 356ish engine, so don't take on any GTR's, but a clean first-gen 912 for VW Beetle money? Interesting.

Sounds like a great deal for the money if it is that well looked after. Hell, you don't have to drive it around much to sell it on.

This guy has 14 listed with the cheapest being $8k for a "it starts and drives" to $80k+. Did not really look to closely as I don't know jack about Porches. For $6k it sounds like it could be a good deal.

The dog in question had a successful European rallying history under private and factory sponsorship.

List a few 911 Targas and hardtops of the day, and see the tables turn.

I would. It's a damn fun car. Don't get a complex because it's a "poor man's Porsche." That's what people say when they're driving a Dodge Dart.

I love small, light cars but... Here's the thing with the 912. Where are you going to drive it? Same with a Ferrari but for the opposite reason. The roads that the 912 was built for are gone. The Ferrari belongs on a track. If you don't live next to a track it is a pretty sculpture.

There is an MG Midget for sale locally for easy money but once again... where you gonna drive it?

I had a 68. Enjoyed it. At the limit it the will out handle a 911, the weight isn't hanging as far off the rear wheels as it is on a 911. It just takes longer to get to the limit. The one I had was around 1900cc with webers so it was a bit hotter than stock. Knew guys who ran 912 turbos and they would run down 911s on the road course because they had the power back but still had the weight distribution advantage.

If you're someone who appreciates a car that handles, and are willing to learn the method of driving a rear engine car on the edge, it would be a hoot. You have to develop a few different habits to drive one on the edge. If the rear end starts to come around, jamming the brake will bring it the rest of the way around.

A common accident in a Porsche is turning onto an entrance ramp and having the rear come around and smacking the rail after hitting the brake to "correct it." Usually a Porsche rookie.

If you enjoy driving a good handling car and want to learn the correct way to drive one, you could have some real fun in that car. Just remember that this example doesn't have much rubber on the ground or much of an effect from mashing on the right pedal.
