Roof mount camping trailer

Brilliant design idea for a small camper. Shame it never caught on. I wonder what effect it would have on handling (though arguably, the effect would be similar on a conventional trailer of the same shape and weight)?

I would think the light weight of the tow vehicle would be an insurmountable problem. The brakes could easily be balanced, but I think the trailer weighing more than that the toe vehicle would be an issue.

I almost bought one of these (Maggiolina?) several years ago for my Cherokee. We were driving a lot of mining trails up in Colorado and Wyoming. It looked like fun but never found the right camper at the right price.

Here is a thread on another forum.

The one that looked like the best deal was too scrungee. It smelled like it was put up wet and left to mildew.

If it was a lightweight camper I think it would work well. Europeans know how to build light weight campers given the fact that their average family vehicle is much smaller than US vehicles.

If it has brakes I think probably not much of a problem.

I don't know though how stable it would be on the highway. any push from a side wind instead of acting on the hitch will act on the roof, causing roll of the car unless it has perfect aero balance.

I think I'd rather have a hitch down at or below the center of gravity.
