"I felt a scary shudder go through my body and brain."
Maureen Dowd's marijuana-induced freak out
BBC News - Maureen Dowd's marijuana-induced freak out I feel badly for her and agree that clear labeling should be applied to any form of marijuana edible. The key issue mandating labeling is the delayed response time between eating and when the effects are felt. It is a gross disservice to the consumer to fail to adequately notify the user of proper dosage and an obvious sign of an immature industry.

I saw that article, and my first reaction was that she's an idiot.
She did not indicate any research into the "experiment" prior to knocking back the entire candy bar. And it's patently obvious by her tone in the article. Just how difficult would it have been to find out other people's impression of the potency and dose? Obviously she was able to obtain edible THC, I would have thought that anyone with a questioning mind would inquire as to the proper usage, at least upon receipt. Again, Dowd's an idiot. Although, I'd like to be a fly on the wall and see her get hold of a fifth of Bourbon. Bet she chugs the whole bottle, then complains about the DTs. After all, the liquor bottle doesn't have any dosage information on it. Jim

^as are most when it comes to this kind of experimenting.
Otoh, perhaps she's not really new to the experience but was playing to the crowd?

Years ago, 30 in one case about 25 in the other, I ate way too much of the stuff in some brownie. No idea about dosage and delay time. You'd think I'd have learned the first time. No freak out, just about 8 or more hours of depressed misery.
These days I've tried it some, I do very tiny bits until I get a feel for how much I want to do. Not bad. My lungs are telling me 'no more cigars, no more smoke.' (link won't work for me)

^not sure what to say about the link in my first article. I’ve tried from different computers and it works okay. There are a number of accounts on the web and Mr. G can help you find it.
I too gave up smoking some time ago. I may try edibles at some point but it is not a priority for me at this time. I remember reading an account of yours about consuming too much by way of edibles. Over-dosing is not a good thing, and imo can lead nowhere but to disasters. In any event explicit dosage information should be clearly stated on the product packaging. If I understand correctly, both WA and CO are permitting stronger forms of mj to be sold and the entire chemical processes should be disclosed as the process of producing hash or other refined forms of MJ in its various forms can put some pretty nasty elements in the final product. The manufacturers owe it to the consumer to do it right and ought to be sued out of business if they do not do so. The state legislatures owe it to the manufacturers and consumers to clearly mandate accurate labeling. The future of the industry depends on it. Another issue that is obliquely referenced in the article is the need for training when people start using MJ. A number of people are confronted with psychological issues they never dealt with before and some become very frightened as a result. Personally I think the legalization of MJ is a great advancement for our culture but there ought to be at least minimal training available so that people can enjoy the effects without going too far.

Yeah, with the risk of such episodes, it sounds like an education one would be wise to avoid.

I would not recommend marijuana for anyone who has a lot of psychological issues. Marijuana, particularly in large dosages can cause deeply repressed emotional issues to surface in full force. That effect may be why Maureen Dowd had an experience centered on paranoia. In contrast, I know many who on first trying it had what they called the time of their life and spent hours having a wonderful experience. I know many that abandoned alcohol after using marijuana. The positive effects are why 100s of millions of people across the globe enjoy it. In the end the effects depends a lot on the person. Of course, too high a dose of anything is generally not a good idea, especially for the inexperienced and in particular for those who psychologically walk on their ankles, so to speak.

She didn't hallucinate, no amount of marijuana will make you see things that aren't there.

Which is ironic considering some people here that have never consumed marijuana do see things that aren't there.
