Typical bourgeois American sports car; dripping with Wurlitzer/Eisenhower vulgarity and possessing a swing-arm rear suspension overripe with the bombastic imperialistic overtones of the Republican Party of the day.

My father works for the Feds in his semi-retirement. A few weeks back he seized a 67 427 Stringray from some guy. Apparently this guy bought the car for 50k, put another 200k into it to bring it to museum quality. When they put it up on the flatbed to haul it away the tow operator supposedly said "if you think that's clean, you should see the underside... I reckon I could eat off it!"

I know at least two guys in his office that are crying because even when it goes to action they aren't allowed to bid on it.:o

I have worked on a few of these early Corvettes. I have also worked on a few Mercedes from the same era.

The Corvette seems like it was designed by a committee. The Mercedes of that era were, without a doubt, designed by engineers.

Its not a swing arm suspension on the corvette. Early corvairs yes but the corvette went from live axle to fully independent suspension with a transverse leaf spring as the upper a arm....similar to a cobra.

I have never noticed anything about it that suggests anything about the R party.

You're right about the suspension, but that is how Leno described it in the video.

As for the first paragraph, correct. The only unusual thing about it is the prop shafts serving as suspension members. The leaf spring serves as just that, a spring.

As far as the second paragraph, I'll leave it to you guys to equate suspension design with political parties. That science is much too illogical for me to comprehend.

A huge number of Jags have been built with the ds serving as the upper locating arm. they have two shocks with coil over springs per side though.

Redundant. '63 IS split window; split window IS '63.

Back when I was a kid, a relative gave me his cache of car magazines from the mid' 60's such as Hot Rod, Rod and Custom, etc. I remember reading one article about how to "update" a '63 split window to the '64 coupe one-piece rear window. I just wonder how much those few seconds with a sawz-all cost future owners in terms of loss of value.

Corvettes are ok. The Duke of Hammond described it as America's Porsche 911. Of course, the Europeans have their own version, which is called the Porsche 911. In terms of driving experience, it gets even better. I like this one:

In the early '70's, when GM was in love with the Wankel, they developed a mid-engine Wankel-powered Corvette prototype. That would have been an interesting vehicle, had it been produced.
