Drones are going to be used to patrol railroads, pipelines, fiber optic lines and electrical lines. They will not get tired and will never need to find a remote spot to touch down on and take a break.

They will also be able to patrol on a constant basis and not just once a week.

Public safety will be enhanced since the DOT says that about 85% of all damage caused to transportation or fiber systems is caused by someone digging them up due to working in a hurry and not filing a dig report.

Drones will also reduce the cost of producing a film or television show. Crane shots are expensive, helo shots even more so.

Lower cost, greater public safety..... Sounds good to me.

How about lowering cost and not increasing public safety via surveillance? We have too much "safety" in this country as it is. Scrapping 90% of what we've done since 9/11 would be a good start.

Of course it would be a good start, but that is a different issue from drones.

I am currently in a situation where I need to turn night into day. There are light trucks I can rent but they are expensive to rent and each move, even if it is just a few feet, is an added expense. We are working with drones to make this take place at a fraction of the cost. And the drones are not much more than large toys you can already fly around the house, so think of the shots we could get if we used real ones.

Yes, they make noise but so do trucks.

So the issue is not just one of additional safety but of lowered cost. That's a tough combo to beat.

What kind of stability are you getting filming from a drone vs a cherry picker, out of curiosity?

Multi-rotor copters with GPS have attitude and position capability to hold them in place, at altitude in a gusty wind up to 15 kts or so. Some of them can be programmed and flown autonomously with a payload of several pounds. That's a great way to deliver high explosives and ball bearings.

Actually, the first exemption to policy regarding civilian drone use will most likely be for film production.

"Yeah, you want to take pictures?" she screams as she sticks her fingers in his mouth and then takes a few wild swings with her free arm. "Yeah, you're going to see how it feels when the police come."
