I disagree. When society advances and matures to the point where one's personal sexuality is of no effect or consequence to any other aspect of life, then "announcement" would neither be needed or symbolic of any significant event.

Advances to the point where no one feels the need to scream their sexual preferences from rooftops. This "persecution" of gays doesn't exist. Weird and gay doesn't have to go hand in hand.
