Yeah, I understand, the smell is a little strong but the soap is fantastic. It washes off which is a good thing.

If there's a soap of equal quality that has a sandlewood smell, i'd be all over it.

Also ditched the canned crap, only use real shave soaps, my lather mug and a nice Silver-tip Badger hair brush, so much nicer!

It has been over the past few years, my favorite and much prefered shave and had kinda started collecting the darn things My daily driver is a older Super-109 Gillette Bk handle Super Adjustable. Also love my Gillette Tech's, especially my 51' ball end Travel Tech. Also have some Red/Blue Flair-tip Super Speeds, Fat Handle, Aristocrat, Schick Injector, Gem's and a couple other single edges. I love this addiction!

The Super Adjustable or a Tech is the daily, they aren't at all aggressive and easy to do a quick daily shave with and do a good job. If I want a really close, baby's butt smooth & soft shave and have the time, I break out my finest DE razor, the Merkur Futur, a nice hefty solid bit of adjustable kit! It lays down a superb shave but you need to treat it with respect! It is a pretty aggressive unit with no safety bar or comb. It does its best work on the highest setting which even feels scary but it lays down a clean pass! Very easy to cut more than hair with this one though!

My personal fave shaving goodies:
Soaps: Daily use, I use Arko, its good and its cheap, I buy it by the stick and use a loadable twist-up stick holder. Other good sticks, Spieck and Palmolive.
Tub Soaps:
Tabac, classic German soap, my dad and on up is German so naturally, I love this soap and it does a great job. Classic German smell.
Institut Karite is a good one, love the smell!
I also love Proraso, very refreshing, prefer the White but Green is good too.
Also like Cella & Pre De Province but occasionally they bother my skin, smells great though.
Pre-shave:
Floid pre-shave oil, great stuff, improves the shave alot, clove smell but it washes off with your lather.
Proraso creme, also a great pre-shave, smells great and refreshing.
Blades: I have tried most of them!
Rapira, my favorite by long and far! My go-to blade! Russian made (buy @ Amazon) they look cheap but not to fool, they are Feather sharp but without the irritation. LOVE these blades!
Also like Gillette Silver Blue's, 7 O' Clock Blacks & Greens, Personna Lab Blue's, Bolzano's and some Supermax. I hate Derby's and Feathers and some of the most common ones. Lot of terrible blades out there!

I do shave my head smooth, I can DE that too but still prefer the Headblade since blades last a long time. Highly recommended for my fellow bald bro's

For anyone new to DE shaving or thinking about it, go find your self a Gillette Tech or Super Speed (antique shops are a great place to find one & you can't go wrong with an old Tech!). Take it home and clean & disinfect it. Hot pan of water with a spoonful citric acid powder, disassemble and plunk it in, scrub with an old toothbrush. It should come out sparkly new, give a good rinse in 90% rubbing alcohol & dry it. Your ready to go. Order a blade sampler pack from one of the great online stores like West Coast Shaving. For soaps, to start with, the Van Der Hagen at most drug stores/Walmart/etc. it great to start with, they even have a set with brush & bowl. Cremo Cream is pretty good too. And out of all the canned goop Barbasol is the best/least chemicals. Everyone is different so your going to have to experiment to find what you like with methods, soaps, blades, etc. Myself, I have very light & sensitive skin, a hard one to deal with but have it sorted out now. I also recommend growing your facial hair out for a couple days and make a facial growth map, your hairs all grow out different directions and a map will show you how best to go about mowing your lawn

Highly recommend watching some videos on Youtube, there's a lot of great info to pick up there!

I used to hate shaving, now I don't mind having a nice shave!

The Merkur Futur below...
My issue is more my hair grows in swirls close to the skin, so makes it difficult to shave every day. Further, the hair seems to plug up the multi blade razors and cause issues, which the DE didn't.

Why is the canned crap?

You sure do have money! Silvertip badger is so expensive, and is it really worth it over best? Also, the Merkur Futur is expensive!

I sure hope it doesn't turn into a hobby! I have enough already... I even now got into fountain pens which started with Oma's from high school. Ut oh... There is a connection!

mytmousemalibu, thank you for the list! That is more than what I was looking for, especially from someone with sensitive skin, and much appreciated!

I got a reply within an hour from Maggard's of which blades to use for sensitive skin. I saw Feather's was not recommended by you, so substituted your favorite and got Rapira Platinum. So, the sampler has five kinds with each five blades, so should last me a really long time, and for just over $10 with postage, way more affordable than the multi blades that only last a few shaves!

I could only find Cremo Creme, and stupidly led Dad talk me out of it.

Glad you like it, I sure do! Got me going on making the switch.

That is what I was wondering: how long these products last. So then, seems the soaps last the same or longer than canned?

Get yourself to Walmart and get some Cremo Shave Cream. No brush, no cup, no fiddling and it is the slickest stuff you can imagine. So slippery I have to wash my hands off after applying it so I don't drop the razor. You won't have to spend an arm and a leg either. A tube lasts 3 months at least and costs about 6 dollars.
elechivioto, thank you so very much!

Glad to hear I will love the Gillette! I used it with a rusty blade and loved the shave. Now that you taught me to shave down and not up, should also not be any nicks. I am so looking forward to how it will really feel with a sharp new blade.

I did research, thus why I asked for it. I am itching to know too, but I am still waiting to get it.

Now re-reading this, I am mad I didn't get the Cremo Cream, as wasn't sure how long it last and thought it might require a brush. Well, going back hopefully to that area, so if I do, will go back and get a tube.

I can't say enough about the Mystic Water sandalwood and sandalwood rose. Not sure if it's ok to link to her site, but Michelle-the owner-makes some amazing stuff. It gets lots of love on badgerandblade.com, too.

I'm just not a fan of canned goop anymore, not after using properly good shave soap. My skin feels better and soap lasts a lot longer! Stuff like the Arko sticks and Cremo, you don't need a brush. Rub some onto your face and keep rubbing around with a little water on your hand (I shave in the shower) and you will work up a nice lather. My sensitive skin likes nice natural ingredient artisan shave soaps used in conjunction with a good pre-shave oil or cream, it feels great. Not only is my skin sensitive and delicate but I also suffer from eczema on my face and all the chemicals in the canned goo bother my skin.

Me.....money.....errr....I wished! As far as brushes go, from the cheapest/coarse are the Boar hair brushes to the finest/softest Silver-tip badgers. Nice thing with the more coarse ones are they pick up shave soap very well and if you don't mind a bit more rough brush, they are great and generally cheaper. The Van Der Hagen carried at most drug/grocery stores/Walmart is decent as is the starter set. I started with one and it was fine, worked great but since I have pretty delicate skin, I wanted a badger. Next I bought a Parker pure badger grade brush, pretty nice! Fair bit softer but not silver-tip soft but the stiffer hairs lathered well. I used that quite a while and finally got me a Silver-tip, not a super expensive one but still softer yet, have to work it more to build lather but its all I use now. I love it! I may get a high-dollar one some day down the road. You can always get a cheaper brush and later pull the plug out and insert a new hair plug of your choice. There are always the synthetic hair brushes too. A new natural hair brush is always a bit smelly at first. Soaking in gently shampoo water helps but just use it and it will vanish quickly.

For soaps and shaving stuff, I just shop online, local retailers here don't offer much. Like said, you can find Cremo Cream at grocery stores and Walmart. If you have any Mom & Pop stores or locally owned drug stores, might have a look, sometimes those places carry some stuff. I have been happy with the products & service from:
West Coast Shaving, Wet Shaving and Luxury Grooming Products
Italian Barber Online Shaving Supplies
http://www.amazon.com/ -good for bulk blade shopping or specific items.

The Futur is a fantastic razor, I really love it. I got turned on to it on Badger & Blade forum.

Something else you might consider is getting an Alum bar of some kind. I have the RazoRock one and really like it. Check out the description RazoRock Alum Block With Plastic Travel Container

elchivito, it is a 1967 TTO. The two parts that hold the blade are a little sloppy, but once tightened all the way, nice and tight.

Will reply/ask questions when I am not mostly asleep...

I have been extremely happy with feather, followed by Kai , and finally Gillette silver blue. Sharks are really sharp, but definitely a rough shave, Astra was a joke.

I need to pick up a brush , cup , & soap. I quit using the canned goop as it clogged the razor like crazy. For now , I use plain old bar soap in the shower. I also shave both ways. First pass is down , followed by up.

My favorites are:
1. Feather
2. Gillette 7 o'clock Black
3. Silver Blue
-I only find Astras tolerable in my 1959 TTO Tech. In all my other razors they aren't impressive at all.

You since you guys like Feathers, you should really try Rapira Super Stainless! They are feather sharp but smoother shaving. Feathers would give me razor burn and irritation pretty bad, I want to like them but they didn't do it for me. A friend suggested Rapira's and I was so happy I tried them, I bought a lifetime supply! They are wonderful in every razor I put them in too. Pretty cheap too.

Amazon.com : Rapira Double Edge Razor Blades - 100 Pack : Beauty
Well, I'm sitting on 200 Silver blues thanks to ordering on Amazon while talking on the phone-only wanted 100. So, as soon as they're gone (several years) I'll look into the Rapiras. Or I'll just burn a few bucks at tryablade.

I love to see a picture of your 'stache!

My issue is that I am a red head, so instead of my facial hair growing out, it grows along my skin in swirls until it gets a little length. If I shave every day, it is VERY painful. So since I don't work, just shave before Church. Sometimes I use the trimmer to shave, especially if it has been a while. The hair especially clogs the razor blades then, and instead of cutting, rips them out.

I had a beard, except not the neck, but shaved it to please a family member, which I learned was stupid. The trouble is they can be more a challenge in the summer and can quickly look scruffy. Despite being 140 pounds, apparently I am very intimidating, and found having less facial hair helps.

I have tried my Opa's Gillette safety razor, but ended up nicking on the corners. Next time will try shaving down if I ever use it; still in the medicine back in the El Cajon house. It was scarey the first time using it, but fun at the same time. Now that I see how little the blades cost, I am seriously considering!

Any recommendations on blade manufacture?

Thank you so very much!
Here's one with just the 'stache from October of last year...

Had planned on it, but person that was going to buy my house couldn't get the loan. Still here in PA. My son threw a bit of a fit when we said we were moving back to Ohio, and said he didn't want to live anywhere near his mother, because he knew that visitation would start back up. We've since decided to stay here until after he graduates in two years.

My shaving needs have changed since I started this post. I have 'chops that I'm growing long, along with the 'chu. Having to use a CPAP at night, I needed the skin on both sides of the 'chu to create a seal.

Now, I just trim shave where necessary on the face, and the entire head. The only area on the head that is an issue is where the hair grows in a different direction, at the top of the sides. I can only get a perfectly smooth shave when I go 4 days between shaving.

I'm still using Dollar Shave razors, and saving a good amount of money. Since I don't change blades weekly, I have a number of 5 pack of razors in reserve. My son wanted a handle so he could use them, and so did the wife, for her legs. I think I'll go another year before I tell them to stop sending blades...that should give me a few years worth of blades.

You reminded me I forgot to post my results.

However, that is not a mustache, but a very amazing goatee. What made you decide to grow it?

Really don't understand growing sideburns with a shaved head; to me they look lost, unconnected. But then, some day sooner than later, will be balding.

As you can see, what I have is what I thought you had: a 'stache.

Tried the Bolzano when I did the neck; didn't feel right. Used it on the other patch of hair, and left red marks with a few bleeders; don't think it helped that it was full winter growth. The worse was on my penis, but since don't partake in intercourse or masturbation, didn't bother me.

When I did my cheeks to neaten up, used Gillette Silver, and not sure I like them.

Do have a question: how does one not catch themselves on a mole or the laryngeal prominence? Found a light touch helps.

Oh, by the way, did notice with a DE, one requires a much lighter touch than the multi blades. Being I have large diameter hair that grows along the skin, the DE does a much better job. Thank y'all!

I belong to a dog owners training group that has about 98 percent women. Found out two women want me to clean up, and two others agree. Not shaving the 'stache, but trying to decide how much should go. What is the modern trend?

The first picture is nothing done, then neck, then cheeks (can't find the one I was looking for).
