Chikungunya

Yup. This is what we need. Chikun-What? A New Mosquito-Borne Virus Lands In The U.S. | Wisconsin Public Radio
Quote:
So far, 112 travelers have brought chikungunya to 27 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. The disease hasn't yet spread beyond those travelers. But health officials think it's only a matter of time. "Right now, we are worried about chikungunya in the U.S.," says Roger Nasci of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "In fact, we expect that over the course of the next months or years — as this virus spreads through the American tropics, and we see more travelers coming into the U.S — we will see local transmission."

It's the by-product of globalization, like the flora and fauna that attaches to container ships and bilge water, the brown tree snake, the coqui frogs, asian carp . . .

Painful Virus Sweeps Central America, Gains A Toehold In U.S. | Wisconsin Public Radio

Quote:
Florida and the regions around the Gulf of Mexico have all the right ingredients for a huge outbreak in 2015, Tabachnick says — the types of mosquitoes that carry chikungunya, as well as a steady flow of travelers from the Caribbean and Central America (where the virus is just gaining a foothold). Mexico reported its first case of chikungunya in November.

"There's very little predictability for chikungunya," Tabachnick says. "But would 50,000 or 100,000 cases in Florida be surprising? I don't know. I don't think so. I wouldn't be surprised."

Add to that the Emerald Ash Boer, and Asian Long Horned Beetle.
