"In fact, we expect that over the course of the next months or years — as this virus spreads through the American tropics, and we see more travelers coming into the U.S — we will see local transmission."

It's the by-product of globalization, like the flora and fauna that attaches to container ships and bilge water, the brown tree snake, the coqui frogs, asian carp . . .

"There's very little predictability for chikungunya," Tabachnick says. "But would 50,000 or 100,000 cases in Florida be surprising? I don't know. I don't think so. I wouldn't be surprised."
