I don't know if it's still custom today, but when I served in the US Navy, they would play the host nation's anthem every morning before playing the Star Spangled Banner at morning muster. From visits to French ports, I grew fond of their anthem. Still think it's stirring to hear.

"Which Beatle's song begins with the first few bars of the French Anthem?" ....question asked on Siruis XM this morning.

La Marseillaise would never pass the PC police in this country.

"The bloody flag of tyranny is raised against us".

"Hear the roar of these fierce soldiers, they come to slit the throats of our children, and our companions"

"May the impure blood (of our enemies) water our furrows"

Still, to listen to Jessye Norman or Mireille Mathieu sing it ( see Youtube ) is very stirring.

The best rendition of La Marseillaise I ever heard is personally, that of Mireille Mathieu, sung for the Bicentennial in 1989.

Take a listen:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3IvXo0W1YI

She sings the two best-known stanzas: the first and the last.

If you know French they are actually quite moving and not actually limited to France. The song was meant to honor and inspire people everywhere, following Voltaire's concept of the citizen of the world (citoyen du monde).
