That's great, but how does your body hold up to the pounding?

I go to the gym three days a week. I run 2.5 to 3 miles, then lift weights for 45 minutes.

With just this routine, I get so much joint pain that I need to take glucosamine and chondroiton supplements daily and prescription strength alleve (naproxen) on workout days.

I swim three days a week, about 45 min. and about a kilo, then do treadmill about 2.25 miles and lift the other two. This way I get by on glucosamine and a baby asperin. If I did it all in one day I'd be hobbled.

I tell my wife that even though I'm only 46 years old, my body is high mileage.

I had a couple pair of New Balance. Not bad, not great. I'm currently using some Merril's I got from REI. Zero drop non-cushioned sort. They and the Vibram 5-fingers that preceded them have made me improve my form quite a bit.

I have been going 7 days a week with no break. The strength gains have been insane. I'm very lucky for naturally high testosterone levels.

I still go 3 days a week, but during the last two weeks on vacation, I've gone only twice / week.

I've been going to the gym for 6 months now, and my gains have been impressive, as well.

When I was lifting weights in high school, I could never bench press more than 185 lbs., and by that I mean, not working out with 185, but 185 was my maximum lift.

6 months ago, I started working out on the bench press with 165 lbs., 3 sets of 10.

Now, I'm up to 225 lbs., 3 sets of 10.

On the arm curls, I started out with 50 lbs. 3 sets of 10, and now I'm up to 90 lbs., 3 sets of 10.

On the treadmill, I can run 3 miles in 30 minutes, although I don't do that every workout. I'm more into interval training on the treadmill, where the speed and incline fluctuate widely.

I'm 46 years old, and I'm in the best shape of my life. I'm not as thin as I was in my 20's and early 30's, but I'm stronger and in the best cardiovascular shape of my life.

The chest is something that is a genetic weak point for almost anyone I think. It takes a lot of work, and at least a solid year to have a solid bench number IMO. I have always had the most luck with getting up heavy numbers in my legs and back. Right now I'm currently trying to gain at least another 40 pounds of weight, and then start a "cut" to shed the weight to get all the definition to show.

The treadmill IMO is useless and doesn't offer the benefits unless you have it on an incline, and adjust the speed accordingly. They are excellent for preparing for marthons, and runs.

I'm not sure what benefit a bench is (?). I still do it, but at some point will let it go.

These days I just do things where I pull up (dead lift), press something above my head (standing military), pull myself up (pull and dips with weights).

I'm not much for numbers or bulk (more overall strength) but by moving around a lot of weight, muscle hypertrophy comes along anyway.

I do enjoy the numbers and seeing where I can take myself in weight. I'm young enough I'd like to try to competitively bodybuilding and start preparing for a competition.

Benching is one of the best exercises for chest strength, and mass building. It is a compound exercise, just like squats and deadlifts. Those are the best 3 for the back, legs, and chest. Deadlifts are just good for about the whole body to be honest. I wouldn't drop benching if I were you.

IMO, military presses are just about the best for the shoulders and are always included in my routine whenever I switch it up. Dips are the pullups of chest exercises since they are a bodyweight (or weighted) exercise.

I have some clients who are from Federal prison and spent a considerable amount of time lifting. Some of them are beasts, way stronger than any schlub (even a big one) in the gym. Typically they are low key about it too...

They're favorite lift is the dead lift, weighted pull up and dip. I figure they are on to something. 😉
