I decided to fill my dream garage on a reasonably tight budget, and limit it to cars which were sold in the U.S. when new:

1972 Opel Manta Rallye, a viable alternative to the BMW 2002 at about 2/3 the (new) price.

1971 Mercury Capri with the 2.0 liter high-compression Kent engine - what the Ford Mustang should have been back then, instead of that bloated 1971-73 iteration.

1969 Datsun 510 sedan - a design inspired by the sixtie's BMW 1600 sedans, this mundane-looking grocery-getter featured a durable SOHC engine, front disc brakes, and independent rear suspension, creating the base for a vehicle that could be tuned and tweaked to surprisingly high levels of performance.

1967 MGB - the last gasp of British dominance in the reasonably-priced sports car market. Ignore later models, which were buggered-up by British Leyland's astoundingly horrific solutions to U.S. safety and emissions requirements.

1970 Fiat 124 Spider - perhaps the best example of Pininfarina styling ever presented in a reasonably-priced vehicle, coupled with DOHC engine architecture, 4-wheel disc brakes, and a convertible top, which unlike its British competitors, could be deployed easily and quickly.

I understand that RX-7's had terrible problems with their piston rings. Are you sure that you want to include it?

Hmmmmmm...

E30 M3
S2000
Scion FR-S
Triumph Spitfire
Porsche 912

If I had a sixth choice it would be a W123 240D, but I've already had one of those. Seventh would be a 190E Cosworth. Eighth would be an MGB. As for practicality, while the rear seats on a 912 are a joke, the trunk (front trunk, frunk?) is shockingly roomy for the size of car it is. A co-worker has an FR-S and loves it, though he does regret getting the automatic. Perhaps one could throw in one of the old turbo four banger BMW powered Brabham F1 cars to go vintage racing in. The qualifying engines made something like 1400 horsepower and the race engines made like 900.
