Raccoon problem

Hello, my lovely neighbor puts out food for the feral cats and raccoons every day. I have not known I had a problem with them in my garbage if I had one but I have a new tenant in the carriage house and he is complaining about them hanging around his front door and scaring him.

I'd give him one of my pellet guns but I'd be afraid he'd shoot his eye out.

Anyone have suggestions about how to keep them away?

I trapped one today and took it to an undisclosed location and disposed of it. That is a huge hassle. I'd rather do something easier.

Id start with talking to the neighbor. Is lovely sarcastic or is the person actually lovely?

Feeding racoons is a bad idea. Few things are as adept as B&E

She is a lovely person in many ways. In this case it was sarcasm since her feeding of wild animals is crazy.

Totally agree, squirrels are way at the top. My least favorite animal. However, squirrels are like kids stealing visible items after breaking a window, raccoons are like 3 guys in a moving van knocking down the door and taking everything in the house.

The link above assumes you don't have some fool intentionally feeding the coons. The only success you're going to have involves stopping your neighbor from feeding them. Raccoons can be aggressive, they're like little bears in terms of claws and teeth and their unpredictable, testy temperaments. Additionally they are high on the list of rabies vectors in N. America.
You might appeal to your neighbor's reasonableness. Tell her that mother raccoons with a reliable human-provided source of food will bring their babies to eat from that source and NOT teach them to forage in any other manner. You'll have ever increasing GENERATIONS of raccoons. Feeding wildlife is well meaning stupidity. Pellet guns won't help. Firearms will but probably aren't an option where you are. Some will always get away and you can bet your last cent they'll come back as soon as they think they have a chance. Good luck.

My next door neighbor & I have the same style house built by the same builders for the same owner under the same contract dated May 1886.

IOW balloon construction. She complained mightily of raccoons climbing up her walls a couple of years ago. I don't thing they ate through the plaster lathe to enter the interior, but she complained mightily of odor.
I think I've had them visit our place in the winter when no one's around. Seen some funny looking "stuff" lying on the back basement floor come spring. We're close by a state park which is on the oceanfront. Even had an old turkey in the yard this summer!

Feeding seagulls at the beach! I imagine the intestinal tract of a seagull is about as long as my little finger.
Seagulls and pigeons will no doubt be the last living species on this planet. Boy, have they adapted to mankind.

I don't know why, but this sounds like another dependency problem in our society...
