Pennsylvania Antique Tags
For those of you who reside in PA, are there any requirements for the antique plate? Does the antique plate get you out of the inspections and emissions?
In Virginia they give you an antique plate and it's good "forever" and you are exempt from any inspection requirements. I'm sending my 54 Chevy 1/2 ton stepside back up to the family farm, and plan to plate it with antique tags once it's there.... Thanks! Jim

Most states have a online DMV web site with forms / laws.
There are bound to be restrictions on what the truck can be used for if plated other than standard issue. |

Hi Jim, from what I've gathered over the years you have to have the car in restored condition (or aiming for originality). From then on you don't need it inspected or anything, but there are mileage and use limitations. FWIW, if you travel under 5000 miles a year you don't have to get inspections here anyways (maybe just for seniors? I don't know, but I do know that is how several people I know operate). I looked into it briefly, and decided it was too much of a pain for my MBs and other potential car purchases.

I have antique plates on one of my cars. The mileage restrictions are there, but honestly, its a very unlikely and difficult to enforce restriction that is pretty much meaningless.

^ PA in particular is a pain when it comes to ANY custom work or anything not stock looking. They have a very weird dmv/tag/inspection setup where it is semi private
Sent from an abacus

piece of cake.i have antique tags on one. no insp, no reg renewal fee. the notary takes 4 pictures, you give them $75 and a few weeks later you get the plate.

I looked into this when I lived in Texas. There was a long list of restrictions and few reasons to get such a plate. This was 25 years ago so things might have changed.
But the main thing I focused on was the mileage restriction which was something like 500 miles a year. The car I was going to plate usually saw less than 200 miles a year so that was not a sticking point, but I asked them how they enforced it? They said the local LEO's would notice an antique car rolling down the street. If they saw you going to a parade or local event the whole miles thing was ignored. But if you used it to go to work everyday, dropping the kids off at school, etc.... It could become an issue. The miles restriction was there only to be used if necessary and no on in the DPS considered it to be a hard and fast rule even though on the books it was. |

Pennsylvania Code
§ 67.6. Use of antique and classic registration plates. No person may operate a vehicle with antique or classic registration plates for commercial purposes or for general daily transportation. Permitted use is limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades and similar uses, and for occasional transportation. Occasional transportation means no more than 1 day a week. To be clear, there is NO mileage restriction for antique vehicles in PA. There may be a mileage restriction with your insurer.

The one day a week thing seems to be much more realistic in terms of enforcement. |

Thanks for all the replies, guys.
I've been in Tucson for the past week plus and out of contact with the cyber world..... The truck was plated in PA 20 years ago when it was used as a work truck for the farm. I've had it in a VA registration with antique plates since. Figured with the minimal use it will get, a PA antique plate will work just fine. The truck is stock, but not restored, no modifications. I've just finished installing a rebuilt 235 six cylinder engine, clutch and am currently rebuilding the entire brake system. I was wondering about the inspection requirements and the originality required for antique reg. Thanks again! Jim

Plating it as a farm vehicle if you have one would be the best usually. Regulations and their enforcement levels vary a lot in various juristictions with antique plates.
Here in nova Scotia they are very limiting. Insurance policies are better and somewhat more liberal in the states I have always observed for antiques. I would talk to a few local guys that have cars with antique plates in your immediate area. Even in my area of the province enforcement is lighter than in larger cities a hundred miles away. |
