Oklahoma lawmakers aim to halt Advanced Placement history course

Oh Oklahoma. You never cease to amaze me.

Oklahoma lawmakers aim to halt Advanced Placement history course

Quote:
A new framework for the course introduced in 2012 has sparked controversy. Cultural conservatives blast the changes they see as questioning American exceptionalism, while supporters say the course offers students a balanced way to analyze how American history has unfolded.
I guess slavery and the Native Americans should just be a foot note in American history?

It would be interesting to actually see the textbook. America had and has it issues, name a place that doesn't. That being said, America is exceptional, make no mistake about it. Those who live here, left, right or otherwise, who don't think we are the exceptional great experiment of freedom should get the **** out.

I assume you're including Navajos, Sioux, Arapahoe, Apache etc in that demand. The ones I know down the street from me do believe that America is exceptional--exceptionally good at genocide and theft.

Personally i believe an understanding of a true account of history makes me a better American. That means no punches pulled on our own history and mistakes made, but it ALSO means no sugarcoating of the intentions of the peoples we clashed with.

For instance, westward expansion was a bloody and violent time, and those native american peoples we displaced are no strangers to genocide and theft.

We are not exceptional. We are not all that free. While living here sure beats the **** out of living in Haiti, guys like you need to take your blinders off and realize that America is just one country on this planet.

There are some things about the US which are important I think. It's one of the first quasi-European countries to throw off aristocracy and monarchy. I think that's a good thing. It's also one of the last, if not the last quasi-European country to utilize slavery as a primary mode of production. Both those things set it apart enough from European societies to require a different kind of analysis when looking at its evolution. But of course neither of those things means it is the best country in the world or that God's hand is especially upon it, or that it has a higher level of nobility than other countries, all of which I think are probably important motivations in trying to keep high schoolers from developing critical historical thinking skills. It's another example of mythology substituting for reality.

I don't really care what you think. Kerry made some good points and I think that we are exceptional. I don't think it is a hand of god thing, as I am not religious. It is at this time, an exceptional experiment in the freedom of the individual. It is also true that there have been many things done in the last decades to erode that freedom, by people on both sides of the aisle. Regardless, this is still the best place in the world, overall. I HAVE been to many other countries, close to 20, and there ain't nowhere like home....

you know, from your constant bleating here on this forum, America would be much better off without whiners like you. There is not a good thing I think I have ever heard you say about this country. If it is such an agregious place, why not leave and go somewhere "better"? Start over in the imaginary world where nothing ever offends your delicate sensibilities.

It's because there's no place like home, as you mentioned.

By criticizing his ability to "whine", you obliquely criticize the right of freedom of speech in the country. How do you reconcile your boosterism of America and the rights it affords it's citizens, with your attempts to squelch the expression of those rights by others? Is America your America, or ours?

whining and free speech are rights for sure, that I agree everyone has, but I often wonder why people who seemingly hate the US so much and are not happy with much of what goes on here, stay. Why not find an place to go? Or, at least, turn the negative energy into positive by trying to make things better and also realizing that nothing is perfect.

it's our America. not mine, not yours, not his

Considering every one of these students has a smart phone in his or her pocket, it would be easy for the teacher to tell the students to read the Wikipedia page on any subject before opening the "official" state approved text book. In fact many teachers already do this.

These BS culture wars are a distraction from what's really going on in classrooms today. The teacher is far more important than the book.
