Is This the Ultimate US Road Trip?

Some guy at Michigan State Univ. think so.

The optimal road trip across the U.S. according to machine learning

The result is not the absolute best route between all of the landmarks, but rather a route that’s pretty darn good.

50 Stops

If you had the road to yourself, it would take 9.33 days of driving, Olson calculates, but in reality you'd need at least 2 to 3 months to make the journey.

Looks to me like it skips 80% of the best stuff in every region of the country

Who would go to las vegas and skip hoover dam? Drive down the center of CA and not go to LA or yosemite or sequoia or death valley?

You do hit Hoover Dam on the route. Unfortunately, the route is Interstate heavy.

Optimal European Road Trip

Italy and the UK seem to get a higher number of "stops."

I don't see the PCH through SoCal or the route getting anywhere near the Tail of the Dragon. Actually, I see a lot of interesting stuff skipped.

The route was not calculated for a "driving experience." I agree about PCH between San Jose and Santa Barbara, more coastline roads, but interstates are the way to go for speed. The parameters were apparently the shortest distance to scenic opportunities like national landmarks.
