WTG SRJ's niece! Great that she is such a high achiever. FWIW, I don't see anything wrong with mentioning the face value in dollars of such a scholarship. I have often seen them represented like that. I guess some folks are a bit resentful, for whatever reason.
I graduated from school without any debt. Worked and received scholarships for various things. It committed me to a certain time in the service of my country, but that was one of the best things I ever did. IIRC, it was presented to me to be worth a certain $$ amount at the time.

You pulled yourself up by the bootstraps - as we used to say several decades ago, and earned it yourself by hard work and dedication. As a matter of fact, I am now learning that the face value of the scholarship is in fact much, much higher than I wrote. Be that as it may....... |

SRJ, Congratulations to your Niece. Well done.
Top laws schools run anywhere from 50-60k per year. If she earned a full ride, good for her. Her "earnings" are a whole lot more than 100k. Double it. Tax law. Never lack for work. BTW, is she blonde? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqsmlFjkAu0 |

Thanks for the commendations there, DL. She's been at the top of her class every year of school since beginning as a child. Graduated MCL from her 4-year, private college's business school with a degree in Economics. It should be very doable staying in the top 40% of her class to retain the scholarship. She likely has a very bright professional future. She's certainly working toward that.

When my first kid went off to school, tuition was 1500 a semester. Four years at 3K per is 12K dollars. When she went to grad school it averaged 4500 a year. Four years grad school is 18K. Middle daughter started at 6K per year. 24K there and another two years grad school at 6500 per is 13K. Sonny boy is in his last of 5 years at 10K per. 50K.
$117,000 in tuition. Living expenses, transportation, textbooks and lab fees easily double that. Total cost to me: car insurance for each of them. They did it all on scholarship, NO loans. I'm proud of them to be sure, but all three knew it was the only way they were going to college. The first two have good jobs they love in their fields and son is already getting nibbles from various agencies and he's got the bulk of this last year to go. Kudos to kids who are willing to work for the opportunity, tough noogies for those who aren't. Plenty of opportunities in the trades. Or they can sell stuff to people.

How long ago was that? I know that my school is 13k a year in-state and is considered quite inexpensive.

October update. Niece was the sole A grade recipient on the mid-term. Rest of the class was graded on the curve. Nearly 100 in her LS class.
