Another Benefit to Autonomous Driving Cars

They don't just rely on GPS!

Police: GPS May Have Told Man to Drive Off Bridge | NBC Chicago

Lake County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Patricia Van Til said the road is marked with numerous barricades including orange barrels and cones, large wood signs stating "Road Closed" with orange striped markings and concrete barricades across the road.

Iftikhar Hussain apparently drove around the barricades and off the bridge. When it crashed, he exited the vehicle and ran, leaving his wife behind in the passenger seat, just moments before the car became engulfed in flames, police said.

Seems weird, what's the purpose of the concrete barriers if you're going to leave a car sized gap?

Im sure they were offset to allow work vehicle access.
I cant blame them for not predicting some fool would thread the needle through the work zone barricades and drive off a cliff.

What gets me is the guy drove around some obstacles immediately before he didnt notice the end of the road?
Maybe he though he was in the movie "speed"

Im with nate300d, the whole thing is fishy

Hmm maybe...

Anytime I've seen a bridge closing I could not drive on the bridge physically if I wanted to. I always thought that was standard procedure, close the road so it is impossible for a car to bypass the barricades.

Work vehicles can be parked beyond the barricade, let them in then close the "gate". Certainly if no one is there it should be impassable.

idk does seem fishy, I mean how do you manage to get a license and then do something like this.

Of course, if you do stop at a barricade, you might get beat up and robbed...
