I just dont get it! (luxury items)

Ok tell me what you think...

1: a $20,000 Rolex has a 1 year manufacture warranty, but so does a casio or something much much cheaper, for $4,000-$20,000 for a watch it should have a longer manufcature warranty. most of the time, the company that sells you the watch extends it (not rolex)

2: a rolls royce, brand new, that costs $300,000+ only has a 3 years manufacture warranty. for that kind of money, i would expect at least 10 years

a mercedes benz, brand new, has 5yr/50,000 mile warranty.

but a hyandi or whatever which costs only a fraction of the price has a 10year/100,000 mile warranty.

3: a mont blanc that costs $150-$$$ only has 1 year manufacture warranty.

And then check this out, generally speaking cheaper things are more durrable or long lasting. Throw a BIC against the wall and nothing happens, throw a mont blanc against the wall and see what kinds of cracks you get.

Toyotas and Hondas are more reliable than $300,000+ cars.

Sometimes I just dont get it... is the more you spend, the shorter warranty and less durable and item is?

my $.02....

Price does not necessarily relate to the quality of a product.

My Objective: Buy quality and durability the first time and you will SAVE money in the long run. Those $20,000 Rolex watches (new) were once in the neighborhood of $600-$700 (back in the 60's). Who knows what they wil fetch in another 20-30 years?

As for me, you can keep the Rolls.....but I'll hang on to my Benz and Submariner for a while

You forgot to mention a few other good ones.

That expensive top of the line computer comes with a standard 1 year warranty, and will be out of date in 6 months. Hows that for a kicker.

Those nice expensive Car stereos and tvs and vcrs and dvd's, you guessed it, most come with a 1 year warranty.

That high end car amplifier, again 1 year.

Those high end car audio speakers, Again most have that 1 year warranty.

Add that to your list of high cost, short warranty items.

How about Chrysler products? 100k mile drivetrain warranty. Brand new Mercedes Benz comes with 50k. Hrm...

The best warranty ever is the Wusthof Trident lifetime warranty. For those who are unfamiliar with the brand, Wusthof Trident makes one of the finest cutlery known to man. I had a rivet come loose one time and returned it to the local Marshall Fields. They replaced it on the spot, no questions asked, even though I did not purchase it from that store!

Another company which stands behind their product is Sheaffer pen. I had a 25 year old fountain pen which had flow problems. Mailed it to Sheaffer, they mailed it back, fixed, no questions asked, no cost to me

MBUSA could learn a thing or two from these companies.

best warranty yet, a zippo lighter, no matter how old it is, mail it in, they repair it for free.

Lifetime warranty.

I remember another one !

For those with good mechanic skills... Craftsman tools.

You take you damaged tool to any Sears store and they replace it without asking you a question.

Think twice next time you buy a screwdriver or a wrench !

RE: Craftsman tools

Most tool companies have this policy, and it is handy! Snap on, MAC, etc. are companies which have trucks come to the job site and deal directly with the mechanics. The beauty of Craftsman is the convenience of Sears (and here in northern CA, you can go to OSH hardware stores as well) and trade in whenever you want.

By the way, I found the best tools made!
FACOM. Facom tools are from France (!) and have better designs than all other companies IMHO.

Speaking of Sears and Craftsman, I was at Sears once when this old fella brought in a broken wrecker bar. The kid asked him where he got it and he answered "here, about 35 years ago!" They replaced it on the spot

What is the warranty on a $700,000 Patek Philippe? I'll bet a $20 Casio keeps better time:p

If you could own five luxury items, what would they be (money no object)?

1. 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SLR
2. Gulfstream V-SP
3. Ivo Fabbri 12 gauge
4. Rolex 18K Daytona on strap
5. 156' Broward Tri-Deck

John

Extremely well put, and thank you for this thoughtful missive!

There are so many people who don't "get it" when it comes to cars.

I have friends in the Indian community here in the bay area, and it is a running joke about what they want in a car. They want a Corolla. They have done the research and the choice is clear!
They don't understand why people need anything else-it literally doesn't make sense to them. Almost Vulcan logic.

I have a Mexican friend who has an old Olds Cierra, and a Honda Accord. Both are 1984's. He can't figger out why I think the Honda is a superior car. They both get him to Modesto and back, they are both the same color (gray)- It is just beyond him!

I know people who think that Ford pick ups with over 50K miles on them and have collasped bushings on these cheapo twin I beam front ends and they think they are not scary to drive. (If you can suss this one out, let me know)

Now see, I think this thinking is just plain weird. Scary even.
What goes on in their mind when they are driving. Do they not notice that the car won't go straight without constant attending the helm? And how do juggle the cell phone, and drive an old Ford LTD?

Isn't this dangerous to us all?

Is it that they have never driven anything better to notice their rides are dangerous and fatigueing???

Question:
If you allowed the dim to drive a decent Mercedes, would they notice?
