Buying a New Car, Will that Be Android or iOS?

Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto compete in connected car market - Fortune

Both platforms have the same mission to integrate the smartphone with the vehicle’s dashboard. Android Auto connects to Android smartphones, while CarPlay works with the iPhone. And they work about the same way. Once users plug their smartphone into the car’s USB port, the phone’s maps and navigation, music and selected apps are integrated onto the central screen. Both have similar features with a few notable differences—CarPlay users can only use Apple maps.

Aftermarket units have had this for years. I have a pioneer unit that is at least 3 years old with that functionality. I don't really use it aside from streaming waze. It has great audio processing though (really why I bought it).

Android for me. I can't stand Apple and would much rather have GPS navigation, music and what not plugged in. OTOH, I do like the Garmin GPS better than the Google Maps but would hate Apple stuff. I could avoid having a CD changer for music and wouldn't have to hard wire a GPS into the car.

No, its not the same as what android auto is doing. Most of those units are stuck with older 4.2 or 4.4 versions of android with no possibility to update. The integration is lacking and its really not something you want permanently bolted into your car.

not seeing a need for all this stuff. when I looked at new MBs the other day, the sales woman went on and on about the Operating system for all the electronics, car even had what looked like a mouse to control key functions in the dash. I guess it is not enough now days to just build the best mechanical system in the world, it has to have this gimmicky ****

Well, depends on the world you live in. My Dad got his GPS switched to speak a foreign language and couldn't make it work. Took me 20 seconds to fix it. Older folk can't adapt to new technology much like the old geezers couldn't when fuel injection came out or the car replaced the horse and buggy.

Im not an old geezer, understand all the stuff there, just don't see a need for it. Id be perfectly happy if they made a brand new W126, fitted as they were in the 80s. Lots less crap to go wrong.

Give me a DIN slot, ideally double-height, so I can upgrade the entertainment system as the car ages, without replacing the entire car!

Clearly, most of us here are not the target market for new car sales.

Average car lasts 10-11 years, so neither are most people.
