I remember a current events discussion in a college class ca. 1972 or so when Nixon proposed the death penalty for drug dealers. There was a guy in class who emphatically stated that it was insanity.

If Nixons idea had been carried out, the drug picture in the US today, would be MUCH different. Instead we have violent crime from the drug dealers plus the fact that they have destroyed the lives and ambition of an untold number of Americans.

Drugs are a TERRIBLE scourge and need to be treated as such. Start heating up the electric chairs for these devils. You can never eliminate it, but you can keep it under control.

If you spray for roaches and kill a bunch of them, there will still be some, but if you keep spraying, you can keep them under control. The drug dealers are nothing but a bunch of blood sucking roach devils destroying our country. Fry their asses.

I understand all that. I don't GAS. Execute the hard drug dealers. Fry their ass. I'm not talking about the idiots that grow and smoke the pot. I'm talking about executing the Meth, Cocaine and Heroin kingpins. Fry 'em.

So you're coming strictly from an emotional place. I understand.

I wonder how the pharmacy companies and medical field would care for that idea since they are probably the largest offenders in the illicit drug sales. I'd bet there are more people addicted to opiates of various kinds dispensed legally than street "junk". Just saying.

So what is emotional about curbing the distribution of hard drugs and the societal destruction they cause?

I would not doubt that at all. There should be some SERIOUS looking at the misused prescription drugs. Unfortunately for now, they are legal and overprescribed. Of course, to hear many posters on this forum, if it feels good do it.

So, does the abuse of prescription drugs justify the misuse of illicit ones? Is that what you're saying?

Unfortunately, the punishment mentality is taking a larger toll on our society, than the drug use is. It creates more criminals

Legalize everything and make it available at cut-rate prices. Let the addicts kill themselves. Take addictive personalities out of the gene pool.

Yeah, then you can give your kids all they want? Is that what you're looking for?

It will never happen. Take one down and ten rise up to try for the prize. The money is too great.

(a) dealing in large quantities of drugs is already a capital offense under Federal law and in some states
(b) drug kingpins didn't get to the top by being saints. most are probably guilty of multiple murders and assorted mayhem in addition to drug distribution

Thus, since the death penalty is already possible and drug kingpins still exist, it's not a deterrent. Plenty of mobsters were executed in the 30s and 40s. The mafia still existed, and they were just replaced.
