Other foreign cars i.e., Lexus/Infinity

We all know with the proper care and maintainence a MBZ will give you many many miles of enjoyment and satisfaction(well over 2/300k mis). Can the same be said for these other automobiles?
The car in question is a 1991 Lexus LS400 with 200k mi. on her. Owner states the car has been well taken car of but, he doesn't have the records. He's asking just over $6k.

My 84 Celica GTS has lasted 260,000+ miles with early service/Moble 1 etc. type of care. Neither my Acura Legend or Honda Civic made it past 140,000 miles with the same care and treatment, and just started spitting out parts around 70 - 100,000 miles. (My records for the civic were 2x the thickness of the Toyota. The Acura record stack was almost 3x the Toyota. My Japanese car tech said he wouldn't own a 1990 or newer Asian car past 100,000 miles as he feels they are too expensive to keep repaired and less reliable than in the past. I personally wouldn't consider any car for a daily driver that had 200,000 miles and no records, regardless of brand.

You might also try a search on the key words Acura, Lexus, etc. as a number of members have listed their experiences with these cars in the past. Good luck.

One of the soccer moms on my sons team has a mid-early 90's LS400. She is now driving a SL500. When I mentioned to her what a nice car I thought the SL500 was she said that they were looking for an engine for her LS400 because it had "blown". She did not go into any detail what she meant by "blown" but I imagine that it probably lost a timing chain or belt - whichever one it has. She said the car only has 220k miles on it and she felt is should not have failed at that milage. She did not mention how she had maintained the car.

A friend's father owned an early model LS 400, and it went about 200,000 miles without problem, and then the trouble started.

Parts were horribly expensive, and they just weren't meant to be rebuilt like the MB's.

I'd stay away from it.

There is probably no doubt that most of these cars last to 100k easily, but after that, is where the differences between them and a benz come into play.

I find benzes when maintained well, last.

You can't guarantee every car off the assembly line will be perfect, but most do well.

In the case of my dad's SL, it is well maintained, yet the tranny still went out at 70k.

Then again my dad has a heavy foot on every take off and then slows to cruising speed.

I managed to break the SL loose, for about a half second before it just gripped and shot off like a rocket.

I love that car.

I can't wait to see how it drives with the fresh tranny rebuild.

I had noticed the shifts seemed harsh and delayed a bit. so with it fresh and nicely adjusted, It should shift smooth and fly.

OK, now the hard part is: my wife wants a Acura TL, I was thinking along the lines of the Lexus for her. For some reason when I mention a C or E class Benz she wants no part of a Mercedes. I still cant figure out hat's the problem with her and Mercedes. Ever since my brother gave me this Benz, she thinks all I ever do is tinker with my car. If I see another Benz on the road and make a comment she has something negative to say. Jealousy? I dont know. All I know is what ever car she decides on my brother and I will be the ones doing all the maintenence. She better decide on the Benz. I tell her that my car has over 200k on it but she still doesnt want to hear it. She swears that I keep my car the way I do for attention. I say no it's for reliability. Always an argument.

If you want a very high performance car cheap the supra maybe the answer.

The Ferrari creed used to be "Ferraris are meant to be drivin" now it's don't race supra's.

Out of the crate they had good performance but with $1000 you can have 450+ HP. I know acouple of people that have them and without the upgrades they have been toyota like reliable.

rsbiomedical,
did you know that one of the coveted upgrades to the Lexus GS line are Supra brakes? i really like the last version of the Supra (early 90's). when that car comes up behind me, i always think it is some high end euro supercar. it's really not that cheap, they still want high teens for one with reasonable mileage...

That kind of handling and HP for the price is hard to come by. Good supra's are hard to come by as well most of the cars I have looked at have already been modified.

I would like one for a every day driver without the upgrades.

The Supra drives and feels like a $100,000 car in every way.

I've got an '92 Audi 80 1.6TD with 180,000 miles on it. The car has a quite few dents and scratches, but the engines excellent and as yet has never broke down or failed an MOT. It's a bit of a reck and not worth spending money on a new paint job, but it has no rust anywhere on it.

My old 2.8 Ghia Granada had 170,000 on the clock, although the bodywork was shot (crappy british weather) the engine was still going strong, not even a puff on start up.

Still, best engine Ford (Europe) ever made, the Cologne V6.
