R-134a charge hose gauge

Can I use a parts store R-134a charge hose gauge without a refrigerant can attached to check system pressure, or will whatever charge there is escape?

Thanks,
Sixto

I think it shoud work if you keep the end valve closed or put a full can on it. But youre only going to read one side.

You can't really tell what's going on without monitoring the pressure on both sides. I am buried in work through Friday, but I will do my best to remember to look for the guage set that was in my dads shop. If it is usable I will send it to you. If you don't hear anything from me before Saturday afternoon, PM a reminder to me.

Gauges are not that expensive. I just bought a set for 401 and it was $59,69, $whatever. 30lbs refrigerant was $79 or so.

The gauges last but you might need new hoses in 15 years or so.

Need good surface temperature readings also. The temps are on the gauge dials for good reasons , subcool, superheat.

Is this for that dual unit in the van?

I just replaced the factory crimped hose on my old Ford truck. After 25 years or so they should all be suspect. $75 for most of the hose on the truck, cheap.
