Should They Just Ban Carry On Luggage?

Vegas Plane Fire Passengers Escaped With Lives _ and Bags - ABC News
While flight crews tell people to leave belongings behind in an evacuation, pilots say they seem increasingly inclined to grab whatever they brought on board. And sometimes even a selfie or two.

"We're always shaking our head," said Chris Manno, a veteran pilot with a major US airline who took to social media Wednesday to slam those pictured on the Vegas tarmac with bulky cabin bags. "It doesn't matter what you say, people are going to do what they do."

If someone is pausing to take a selfie while between you and the door during a fire evacuation, you have the right to physically move them to the side or run them over as you see fit. Their selfie could kill the last of the folks trying to get out. Idiots.

I'm sure a law-maker somewhere is going to introduce legislation criminalizing such foolish and dangerous behavior.....

...or discouraging selfie shots by mandating a passenger group photo after every evacuation...

If you let people carry on a jacket/coat, or a purse/bag with dimensions 12" x 18" x 4" NO EXCEPTIONS, it would work.

Meh, I usually pack my carry on with the idea that it may well be the only bag that makes it, either to the destination, or with me should there be some sort of incident (that I/we survive). So, yeah, I'd take it. Water, first aid supplies, flashlight, basic survival items, all stuff I'd want to have, and all stuff that the airlines are unlikely to provide. I can say that TSA rules not allowing my Leatherman are not to my liking. Since I may be spending several days in an unplanned area, whether urban or wilderness, I like to be prepared to take care of myself and my loved ones.

But it is also in a small backpack that is under the seat in front of me, and can be donned in about the same amount of time it takes most people to stand up and maneuver out of their seat. Any of the large bags, or placed in an overhead bin several rows from your actual seat, those would be a hindrance.

The selfies? Not so much.

The TSA actually wanted to allow small knives in 2013 to harmonize with rest-of-world rules allowing blades less than 6 cm/2.5". Sadly, the Air Waitress Union (no, I won't give them the dignity of calling them "flight attendants") lobbied hard to nix this change in the rules and it worked.

(Yet they still serve drinks in glassware on international flights.)

They're probably still stuck on that September 11 business. Time to move on.

The FAA already has regs, such as "Obey all crew member instructions" in place to enforce.
