Bingo!

Energy yielding fusion reactions can fuse atoms up to iron. Anything higher up the periodic table came from an energy losing reaction happening in a nova or supernova, unless it was made here on Earth by some physicists with some high dollar research/breeder reactor equipment.

Does seem tempting but it strikes me as a long shot. The cost of getting to them and doing an operation in space, and then actually getting any worthwhile quantity back to earth w/o disaster could be huge.

Major nickel deposits may be essentially the result of asteroid hits of old for example.

Common soil to me has enough organic components that I suspect it developed in place. Although the origins to let this happen occurred externally to the earth itself.

Human presence on this globe is not infinite. It is almost a miracle that we are here at all. The globe will itself probably survive in some fashion without us.

Most likely is a serious asteroid collision followed perhaps by our own stupidity. Here today and gone tomorrow is not a stretch. For some reason a large asteroid that came close to earth not that long ago was not detected in approach until very late. Not that we could have done anything about it if it had been on a trajectory to impact.

I will always remember the string of astroids visually hitting Jupiter in my lifetime. Any one of them would have killed all of us off very easily.

Wiki indicates it was written by Joni Mitchell but made famous by CSNY.
