Hubcap theft reminder/warning
Went to Boston this weekend. Some crackhead tw*t stole all four hubcaps off my car. No other damage/vandalism.
Reminder: if you have a car with hubcaps and park in a populated area, safety wire them or zip tie them. Or sharpen the edges to make any thief bleed. |

We just run the plain steelies, not so much because of the theft (we've never experienced it), but because of the potholes around here... hubcap eaters.

Got me them mag wheels. In the late 70s in Seattle, I owned a Gray Top cab for a couple of years. Was a '72 Plymouth Satellite with a 318. That was about as small as the engines came in terms of cab donor stock, but it was fast for a Detroit sedan. A guy at a service station where I took it in for quick emergency fixes was selling some mag wheels with excellent tires a tiny bit bigger than what I had so I bought them, had the meter adjusted. I swear, I might be the one who started it. A few years later I noticed Yellow Cabs with a sort of chrome looking alloy wheels. Could well have been chrome plated steel but they were definitely hubcap-less. Less to have to mess with. Before long they were on almost all the cabs.
I later drove some of those Yellows, usually former cop Chevies with big 8s and it's funny, but I don't know what the wheels were made of. The guy I sold to later bought a Plymouth Volare wagon with a slant 6. I drove it briefly. Gutless but economical and you could get airport runs ahead of other cars if they asked for a wagon. Sorry for the TMI. *Ah* Just found this pic of chrome plated steel wheels. Looks a lot like what I recall:

I have three mismatched Mercedes hubcaps (three different colors) in so-so condition laying around. You can have them for the cost of shipping if you want.

It is not legal to run chrome plated rims in Germany since they chrome will start to flake off after about twenty years and then the wheel starts to rust when water gets under the chrome.
I was looking at a W140 in a salvage yard a year or so ago and it came with factory chrome plated wheels that were beginning to flake off. The salvage yard owner was griping about how he could not sell them since the steel had begun to rust. But to be practical I should think this would only be an issue on a Mercedes. How many cars are going to last long enough for this to be a problem? It is a matter of time needed for the chrome to flake off vs. how many years the car is going to be able to run. A Mercedes can go a long time, so I should think that only alloys would be the way to go. |

A few decades ago, my Dad got a great deal at a thrift-store, on a set of factory Chevy wire hubcaps that probably came off a Corvette. He put them on his '67 Malibu station-wagon, and that weekend, drove up to visit his mother in Philly.
The hubcaps never made it back from Philly! Happy Motoring, Mark

I had this type of hubcap locking system on an old Cutlass I once owned that had wire wheel hubcaps:
8 Wire Wheel Hub Cap Screw Locks Lock System 1980s Omega Skylark Citation for Sale - emgCarTech Basically you had to drill through a relatively flat part of the hubcap and into the rim, then screw these locks - two per wheel - into place. Low tech, and pretty effective. |
