Traded my 14 Jetta for 15 Passat....

I looked for the right 5 yr old e350 and I was insulted by the trade in values being offered for gas VW s. Best trade in value I could get for my 14 Jetta was $9000. Loaded with 27k. $21000 last yr $9000 this yr.....

So what do you do ! Go get another new VW!!

2015 Passat limited $7500 off sticker makes car a lil more appealing. They paid off my trade completely which was only $13k. And walked out with a car that has twice interior volume, better ride, some more fancy equip, lower interest rate for $20 more a month.... I'm happy....I guess I will ride this thing out with VW and my goal for a newer MB will wait a lil longer. Peace

I assume the Jetta was a Mexican built unit. Do you know where your Passat was built?

My backyard.....Chattanooga Tn. I tell you that Mexican built Jetta was tight as the varnish on my coffee table. Just full of plastic. Passat much softer inside.

Goodness - factories all over the shop.

There's a lot of rudeness about the Mexican (old) Beetles and the transporters. Good to hear the Jetta is well made albeit more basic than perhaps the European spec Golf (Jetta with out a boot)...

Better extreme Southerners than US Southerners. Personally, I liked the hard plastic interiors of 80s and 90s Euro and Asian cars. Simple, unpretentious, easy to keep clean, and no plastic chrome crap to generate glare.

If I were given a choice of VW, I'd get a manual, basic Jetta III from the 90s. Awesome cars.

Now I miss my '86 VW Rabbit convertible. I paid $850 for it, drove it for two years, put $35 into it and sold it for $850. That was quite a fun car to drive.

Gas jetas should have not been impacted for trade value that much. I do expect new product will reduce in price to whatever makes them somewhat salable in the next year or so.

I did price a 2016 jetta over the phone in Canada just the other day. New three cylinder twin turbo 1.4 gas engine with air and manual transmission. This engine has been used in Europe for at least several years. Brand new to north America.

Wagons tend to hold resale a bit better and if I can work a decent price on one I might consider it. Of course this car is for the wife so I will have to do a selling job to get ther to consider a wagon. Perhaps telling her she can get a lot more into the back of one when shopping might do it.

Good power and better gas millage. I would have to verify that it does not have a hidden pollution equipment issue as well. Two screw type turbos are incorporated.

Over the phone 20.5K in Canadian dollars. Exchange rate is about thirty percent right now. So about 14k in American dollars. Plus of course 15 percent sales tax and some form of shipping charge that I perhaps might get eliminated at least if they are really pressed hard.

I have a suspicion that they may be far more receptive to offers than normal. Volkswagon is going to demand sales be pushed harder than normal. Dealers will be far more reluctant than ever to watch a potential sale fail. I also think that if they are running some form of zero interest at this time. Paying cash might pull it down a couple of more grand as well.

The car has to be heavily discounted as the two relatively local dealerships may not survive. That would make the closest dealer 125 miles away. I am also assuming a dealer would have to be sought out for engine problems on that engine. Unless something was pretty obvious.

What may sustain Volkswagon is guys like us that have owned their products before and may have the chance to get into another much cheaper than normal. That three cylinder engine I assume may have a balance shaft and is chasing the diesel for fuel milage returns. If the statistics on that engine are valid.

EPA on millage estimates is usually somewhat of a joke though with gas engines.

Barry i called 3 dealers in a 100 miles radius and let them fight for my business.
Everything was in my favor. The dealer I bought my Jetta from came off an extra $2000 with my first request. All I had to say was " dealer x has this price" a small white lie. Then I told them I got a lower payment else where. 2 dealers replied and matched the price. Car list for $25600 and I was at $18900 in an hr.

At that point I was happy and bought the car. But how far could I have gone? They were like a pack of vultures on roadkill. My salesman even said to me as I was departing that he was not gonna give up and they were going to capture the sale no matter what! VW Corp has told them to do anything to generate #s.

One note my car under the hood and in all nooks and crannies are dusty even after they did a clean up for my delivery. I definitely got old stock.

Still half the depreciation $$$$ of a new S-Class.

VW gassers (with a few exceptions like GTIs) would depreciate that quickly when they were new. I used to always have a 3-4 year old low mileage jetta in stock and they never cost more than $10k.

At the outset of the VW TDI crisis I took a snapshot of 2013 Jetta TDI wholesale comparables. One month later I'm looking at pretty much the same numbers. I thought I would see more of a blip.

I averaged the prices based on all sales from the month leading up to the crisis to the month after. The sample was similar with varying mileage and condition, about 15 cars give or take.

Before Average $14,503.
After Average $12,246.

Wholesale prices tend to be lowest from the end of September until after Christmas, so the difference really isn't anything striking to me.

Thanks for that information. I thought they were going to be pretty desperate to sell cars for awhile. Volkswagon may have even worked out a final dealer cost based on the actual amount of sales dollars each unit brings.

The site member that mentioned the 1.4 was a four cylinder I appreciate it. It looked so small I thought it was a three cylinder. I do not like balance shafts in engines anyways.

Car sales help keep the economy going. I buy newer cars for the wife simply because the wife likes them. She does not mind me doing this.

Otherwise you never would know what would appear at home. We do not have a hers and his money thing going either but still she likes to see me pay for them.

Women in general I guess is about the only answer. Same money pool. If this approach keeps the wife happy it is okay by me anyways. For her age she is still pretty dynamic.

Part of my logic is they temporarily distract her from things I should have gotten done anyways. This list of hers never seems to diminish.

She mentioned I should keep her Toyota for myself. What I do to my daily drivers eliminates this.

For example. I stopped for a gallon of synthetic oil awhile back. I was in a hurry so placed it on the back floor of my daily driver. Our large dog took the lid off and spilled part of the contents on the back seat.

This was totally my fault as he likes taking lids off containers. I knew I should have put it in the trunk. Next time going past an auto wreckers I will pick up a good used seat bottom.. Yesterday I had 10 2x4s in my daily driver . The dogs jump in it with their less than clean paws usually as well.

I will be pursuing the newer jetta for her if the price works out. We have this other unwritten rule. I am not to use her cars. I have no ideal of why or where or how this self centered attitude of hers originated from. She also hides the second key.

I was about a day away from pulling the trigger on a new Golf Sportwagon TDI manual before the exhaust fumes hit the fan with VW and I ended up with a F150 instead. I think in my case it was a good thing since I'm extremely happy with the truck and I don't know if I would have felt the same about the VW.
