Time has reduced the second world war awareness. Almost all participants have expired as well. The first world war almost totally forgotten now.

My grandfather on my dads side was killed in that one. Machine gun bullet through his pocket bible. The small bible was returned to the family.

I feel the same way about the Peloponnesian War. Remember the spartans.

I knew some WW1 vets when I was much younger. One guy had been gassed. When I knew him he was 57 years old.

He looked like he was 80.

My grandfather on my mothers side,was shot in front of my Mom by the S.S.,her was a preacher that helped the Jews,My father was in the Korean War,but stationed in Germany.

There is a little empathy here at least. I never got to meet my grandfather either. I will say this though it probably took some guts for guys to climb out of a trench and run at machine gun positions. On both sides.

Plus staying in pretty fixed locations with large field pieces registered on your positions.
