68 porsche 912 experts out there?

Looked at a 68 912 today. Sitting since 98. Stuck motor flat tires, mice in the engine compartment and in the interior. 72K. It was painted once, looks fairly nice, decent bright work excepting the brake vent grills which are pitted. My sil went with me. He said there is some rust here and there. He offered the owner (a friend of mine) a price which I am certain they think is too low.

any idea about whether it would be easy to get unstuck? They said it was driven into the storage space.

It has me thinking. I always think "I could get that started!" whenever I see an old car sitting.

I sold a running driver 2 years ago for $9000. Worth at least double that now.

Just an old driver. A few bubbles on a decent paint job, various rust repairs underneath over the years. Had a crunchy transmission and needed front end work. Great running rebuilt motor.

I paid $6000 for it, and should have stashed it somewhere and let dust build up on it for a few years, then sell it as a barn find for $20,000.

912's are the last air () cooled Porsches still somewhat obtainable. A guy I used to work for bought one as an investment 7 years ago, paid close to $20K at the time.

His is a short wheel base, early one. After restoring it I believe it's insured for $60K.

Well, maybe. But yours had obvious rust, and was in Wichita, KS. IIRC, I wasn't down with the rust.

Be that as it may, I'd have to see proof of what that friend-of-a-friend actually had and sold it for - to believe it. Sounds far fetched to me./proof

I've been hunting for the "right" 996 Turbo for about a year now. Hopefully I'll be able to park one next to my W203 this next year!

The stuck motor is from the pistons being stuck in the cylinders. OK, that's easy enough to figure out.

So how to get them unstuck? The only way I have ever been able to do it is a total tear down and then soaking the tops of the pistons with something like Liquid Wrench or an equal product. And this takes days.

Then, when they come loose, you just rebuild the entire engine.

But how can alloy pistons stick to an iron cylinder pot? Easy. Because it is the iron piston rings that are stuck, as in rusted together with the cylinder.

So throw in the price of an engine rebuild. And a 912 engine is not a 911 engine with two less cylinders since many internal parts are different.

Check out the price of cam followers and then know that you will need eight of them.

And since the cylinder bores will need boring you might also look into what a big bore cylinder/piston kit would cost. It might be cheaper than going with what you have after the machine shop is finished.

But it is all in the asking price. Consider what the repairs will cost, add 50% of that amount to your figures, and then roll that into your offer.

The body style of the 911/912 of this era were/are irresistible to a lot of ppl. A professor @ Wayne State drove a red 912.......back in my college days - very memorable back then.

I drove a 912 quite a bit summer before college. For the life of me, I don't see what's so great about these.

I agree with iwrock -- If I were in the market for a 911, it would be a 996 turbo. Best bang for the buck right now. I don't care for the headlights, would have to be updated.
