The Internet of Way Too Many Things

I know, let's connect everything to the internet and everything will work better.

At a design conference recently, I was introduced to Leeo, a new product that I initially understood to be a reboot of something really in need of a redesign: the smoke detector. As the designer explained his process, I quickly came to understand that Leeo was nothing of the sort. It was a gadget, a night light that “listens” for your smoke detector to go off and then calls your smartphone to let you know your house might be on fire.

So, to “improve” a $20 smoke alarm, the designer opted to add a $99 night light and a several-hundred-dollar smartphone.

This is not good design.

Depends. Yes it can go way too far and be rather silly. On the other hand, it allows for a lot of measurable data which can then be extremely optimized and customized for efficiency/use etc. All you need is some good data science.

It might have promise if used with care. What I've been noticing so far is a small army of investors and techno-geeks salivating about going bigger than Microsoft. I too would like to get rich but the flip side of that is avoiding buying a bunch of shiny things that ultimately don't enhance my life.

You guys are nuts. Text and email alerts telling me my TP supply is getting low is a life changing convenience. No more do i have to specifically look at the roll and decide its reaching the end.
I also love my text and email wifi alerts when my shower water is hot

My iPhone email inbox is just pitiful. Like a morgue in there. I hardly ever get any emails. A notification that I need cream for my morning coffee when I'm on my way home would be pretty cool. Also, you'd think someone would try to sell me something with an email. Where is everyone?

^ Little too dry. I really need to clean up my iPhone email. Sweet Jesus, it defines clutter. Seems everybody and their grandmother has some bot that tirelessly combs the world for stray money. Meantime I have trouble findng the stuff I need.

From the article posted by OP:

Technology is integrated not because it is necessary, but because the technology exists to integrate it — and because it will enable companies to sell you stuff you never knew you were missing.

Exactly. The marketeering scum can stay out of my home. And go make sweet love to themselves with a Cossack dagger while they're at it.

Some of this stuff -- devices that listen or take images (Dropcam, looking at'cha), then upload to the clown ... I mean cloud ... is also damn creepy.
