That's awesome! Reminds me of an editorial cartoon in one of the Detroit newspapers in the '70s. Cop #1 to cop #2: "he was driving a Pinto with Firestone 500 radials. We're ruling it a suicide."

buddy of mine had a pinto back in the late 70's and back then i wanted him to paint flames from the back like that.car got wrecked in the front end and got junked.

Briefly owned a lemon-yellow '77 Pinto Pony MPG hatchback in the early '80s.
It had the gas-tank protection package, plus 5 mph bumpers, so less likely to detonate on impact. Might have kept it had it been a wagon.

I had a lime green one with vinyl top,I sanded it and repainted competition orange,looked good with white top,with front and rear spoiler.also advanced timing 6 degrees,had a super coil,enriched the mixture,and glass pak.Best little car a had,till cam wore out to bad oiler.

I wonder if there's been any progress with Nader's 'tort' museum, since that article is over 10 years old. I noticed it mentioned the proposed building has peeling paint.

Also I think some people don't consider lawyers & lawsuits entertainment.
During the '60s, my family survived TWO Corvairs, including the rare version that killed comedian Ernie Kovacs - a '61 Corvair Lakewood station wagon.

I've found some interesting things about the Pinto on the 'net. In the first case that came to trial, a 1972 Pinto stalled on a California highway and was then rear-ended by a Ford Galaxie. The Pinto's doors jammed and the resulting fire killed the driver and horribly burned the passenger- a 13 year old boy.
Ford's fireball fiasco was not only due to their greed and stupidity, but also outdated US Federal accident statistics and bad timing.
While many existing cars in those days had poor gas tank designs, the Pinto was a brand new design, introduced during the expanding popularity (thanks to Ralph Nader) of the consumer movement. Ford engineers had tested the Pinto gas tank design and knew it was flawed, but Lee Iaccoca decreed severe cost limits on the Pinto's development and manufacture.
Then Ford used outdated DOT figures that put the average payout in a firey car crash at just over $200,000, to justify not improving the Pinto gas tank design, and published this information in a memo which was subsequently leaked during the first Pinto civil trial. Just how outdated the DOT's figures were was shown when, in addition to actual damages, the jury returned a punitive damage award of $125 million!
Though the total amount was later reduced on appeal to about $6 million, that was still way more than the original $200,000 DOT estimate.
