Perhaps not the best news.

That they have found new craters in northern Russia has been reported. They think as the perma frost is melting and the suppressed methane gas pressure is blowing up huge craters to the surface. . The picture I saw was one of them about a hundred feet across and perhaps 50 feet deep.

They fear the mass release of all the methane gas if the thaw continues. I do not know if this accelerates global warming or not. Although the Russians seemed concerned about this.

When it gets to so called global warming. I wonder why the north pole area is increasing in temperature at a much faster rate than the south pole. Other than the air circulation in both hemispheres are not linked.

Since so much more pollution activity has impacted the northern portion. I guess there may be some real validation that mans activities may be a real problem.

Although I have never hear of this separation of hemisphere effect used. Technically one would think that both portions would be responding the same if man was not present.

This latest find may bring some real attention. So far no other answer is suspect as the cause of these new craters and there is even some residual proof methane may be involved.

Personally I have wondered about the cumulative effects for years. Specifically of the huge amount of pollution dumped into the air by commercial jets each day in the northern hemisphere. The amount of flights compared to those in the southern hemisphere is more than just substantial. There are far more jets in constant service in the northern hemisphere that one would think possible as well.

At first as a Canadian I though some global warming may not be too bad. My opinion over time has been changing. I now think man is stupid enough to damage his environment to the point it is not usable by the human specis. To me this Russian find may have to end things like all these flights. Or find a way to power them in a non polluting fashion that I think is impossible at this time.

I also think that this current Russian discovery is more important than the large meteor site hit in the very early part of the last century in a remote section of their country. That one was like an atomic explosion from the existing damage. For example all the trees where blown down for a very large radius from the crater site. All the trees blown down must have presented a real struggle to reach the crater site as the area was all forest. There are old aerial pictures existing that are interesting to see. The explosion in 1908 was about 1000 times larger than the bomb used on japan. It flattened a forest area of 850 square miles

The north pole is all wattery, so the ice floats in it. As the ice cover gets smaller or melts off earlier it bares unfrozen water, which is much better at absorbing sunlight and warming the surrounding water and air than it is on the south pole which sits mostly on land.

The northern ice is floating so melting it will not raise sea levels much if at all. All the ice sitting on Greenland and the south pole is a considerable mass so when it melts it will raise the sea levels much more significantly.

I think the melting of the tundra is a very ominous event.

Methane is orders of magnitude better at trapping heat than CO2.
