VW news coming tomorrow... stay tuned!
Rumors include that they might be offering each owner $5000, buying the cars back, or perhaps a mix...
If they do the $5000 to each owner option, I'm curious how that would be doled out... to current owners, to people who bought them new, or some other group? Would people who bought cars after the scandal broke be eligible, or would the money go to the people they bought it from, or to neither? And if they do buy them back, would it be at current market value or at pre-scandal market value? I can't see it making sense for them to pay MSRP, since the owners have received some amount of use out of the car already. Volkswagen Will Offer $5000 (Update: And Maybe A Buyback) To Customers Affected By Dieselgate: Report

I don't see how offering cash to customers squares them with EPA. Short of buying all the cars back & crushing them, I can't imagine how they expect to solve this.

I think that's to compensate for the lost value...

I'd wait on taking the 5K unless the car is already totaled or worth less than 5K, until the gov decides if these will even be street legal.

Not sure why you wouldn't take a $5k check? This wouldn't be a buyback, just a reparation for the scandal.

If the choice was a buy back. Or to sue them for a worthless vehicle. Take the 5K and sign away anything else. Might be stuck with a lawn ornament.

The report makes no sense. There's not going to be a $5000 check just for nothing. Resale value is the owner's problem, Vdub's problem is avoiding ruinous fines. These cars will need to be bought back and scrapped, or brought back to dealers for retrofit. Since VW has yet to demonstrate a compliant retrofit, I expect the scrapyard will be the only option allowed by the court. At some point, it will become impossible to register non-compliant VW's in the US.

What I heard on the radio was to be a buy back, I believe.

VW is now being sued for patent infringement on hybrid technology.
The defeat in the diesels in the ECU. I would think replacing or reprogramming and ECU would be far less than $5,000. Also, it would show that you FIXED the issue rather than merely cover it with cash. It is going to be a tough road for VW for some time.

VW saves thousands of dollars every day they can drag this on. To be eligible for the settlement you have to own the vehicle in question between Sept. XX of last year and to the date of settlement. People that sold vehicles, totaled them etc. are not eligible. It stands in VWs interest to get as many of these out of the suit as possible.

I think Volkswagon will survive but are taking several heavy hits. Their gas cars have made the ten do not buy cars list in Canada reciently. Basically too many expensive type failures.
High pressure fuel pumps contaminating fuel systems with lost metals from them. Automatic transmissions once again not that reliable. It is becoming a serious issue with the auto transmissions as they have remained an issue far too long in the brand. The frozen intercooler issues as well. Then one also has to wonder if they will continue diesel sales even though they probably will as worldwide they have been signifigant. The buyback issue is not to destroy the vehicles I suspect. Just move them to countries with no pollution requirements and sell them as used vehicles perhaps. I suspected they may do this from day one anyways. Although it probably just was luck of the draw they got caught out over another brand. For quite some time I have not seen many new Volkswagon products on the road locally either. I was considering a new Volkswagon gas car for the wife for the safety aspect especially. With the latest ratings it is not as likely to happen. |

As the market is today you probably will recover at least half of what you paid and go buy another one. Generally a used car buyer will be unaware of the new cost of what you are selling. Possibly the cheapest overall cost of owning newer cars I can come up with. The problems they have should not surface at under 100K kilometers. Yet what does if any is probably under warranty. Costs per mile or killometer of ownership is about as low as it gets with new cars on that basis. That's if you want to stay in newer cars under warranty. |
