Sold car .now the owner is driving the EZTAG lane under my name

I have a bill of sell with the buyer ,anything else that I may need to get them on the right track and off my back ?I hate unresponsible buyers ,the guy said he was heading down to the DMV right away to establish new ownership ,3 violations so far since the sell.
Going back some 10 yrs ago I had a letter from a Calif. city showing me a car I had sold earlier that yr. that had a parking voilation ,a pretty big price tag was with it.

Cancel the ez pass transponder and submit it to ez pass along with copies of the paperwork... you'll get them waived.

Sent from an abacus

Are you in a state where the license plates go with the car, not with the owners?

chasinthesun 05-14-2016 06:12 PM

Not that I had an EZTAG PASS ,he has had the car since Jan and has no tag on the car but the car is still registered in my name . In Tejas plates go with the car .Just so happens I know where he lives but just dont know the apartment #.
It goes with my past experience with the guy ,he wanted to swap rims from another car I had parked next to the sold vehicle ,he was MIA for 4 weeks , harrassing him finally got them back .

What about notification the dvm? As long as it is registered to you it represents a potential liability. I think I would at least talk to them. The guy is obviously taking you for a ride.

You may be able to at least cancel the current registration as it is in your name. I doubt he has insurance either.

You may need your copy of the bill of sale to attempt to get rid of those tickets as well. Requirements are somewhat different from region to region I imagine. At the same time you cannot have someone driving around in a vehicle registered to you. Unless you want to assume the responsibility for it.

Which is why it's important to get a bill of sale from the buyer in cases like this.

Don't ask. :(

There is a form that you can fill out on the Texas DMV website to let them know that you no longer own the car. Not sure how you cancel an EZ Pass though, as I don't have one.

It's the vehicle transfer notification. You can fill it out online here: https://vision21.txdmv.gov/Vehicle/VehicleLookup.aspx do this immediately. It serves as proof that you no longer own the car. Up here in dfw the tollway folks will look it up and stop pestering you; I expect the same is true in Houston. Probably you are on the hook for the current violations, but the vtr will take care of any future ones.

Btw Texas is no longer a tags go with the car state. You are supposed to keep the tags now. There is a state website at which you can print a free 5 day temp tag which the buyer can use to take the car home.

Ripoff Report | HCTRA EZ Tag Complaint Review Houston, Texas: 1141130
After reading this it might become a nightmare for me ,the phone # the hctra gives on the mailed ticket invoice is a joke ,wait 30 minutes after twice calling them with no one picking up or even a vm to leave ,no address to physically go too to try to resolve this issue .

yet another reason why plate-to-owner (as opposed to plate-to-vehicle) makes much more sense......

from what i understand the camera at the toll collection area is taking pictures of your old car and plate, still technically registered to you, going through without paying.

i know there is often a delay here between the time you apply for registration and when the state gets it into their system. perhaps the violations occurred before the transfer was input? it sounds like the bill of sale, predating the offenses, should do the trick.....however, like tom petty said, the waiting (either on hold, or in a dmv cue) is the hardest part:)

Just for future knowledge, Texas now lets you keep your plates.

I don't know what Texas titles look like, but in Ohio I always get a copy of the filled out title, front and back with the buyers name and info in the buyers portion and a signed bill of sale. I've had friends have cars sold on open titles get impounded and the impound starts coming after the last known owner, which was still them as far as the Ohio BMV was concerned. I also never let someone roll on my tags.

Fill out that form someone gave you ASAP, do you have a bill of sale or a copy of the title?

in texas you keep your plates, I have bought and sold cars in Houston - I remove the plates. In one case I delivered the car outside the DMV and removed the plates - the new owner got new plates after the transfer. I put them on for her too.

The online form is pretty useful too if you gave plates with the car - I did sell a car along with the plates and I got a letter from some impound in Louisiana about my car being there, I made a copy of my bill of sale and the online form I had and put that in the mail - nothing after that.

I believe if you call the HCTRA they can tell you what to submit in this case. They are decent folks to deal with.
