Local Foods

What are the distinct foods in your regions? Are there any foods that are peculiar to your area?

Cincinnati is known for its chili; Philly is known for its cheese steaks, hoagies and scrapple; NYC and Chicago are known for their pizza; New Brunswick is known for its fiddlehead ferns; Manitoba for its walleye; Idaho for its potato; Washington for its asparagus; the prairie provinces are known for perogies and Saskatoon berries, etc.... I also heard about a sandwich that is peculiar to Omaha or St Louis, can't remember though. The south equals catfish and cornbread; New England is the famous Maine lobster, etc, etc, etc

Please feel free to add to my list

Yes GermanStar. Fiddleheads are sold frozen or in cans(tins) in eastern Canada.

Tripas de leche, all along the Southwest Border. An acquired taste, but goes well with a little beef and beer. Basically Mexican chitlans. Half of the experience is watching them cook, looks like finger soup .

Blackmercedes, putting mayonaisse on fries is a Belgian/French thing also. What I found interesting in eastern Canada was that some people eat fries with vinegar, but I'm told that's a British thing. I had fries with vinegar numerous times at Harvey's.

Newfoundlanders eat moose and rabbit also, I had never tasted it until I visited your newest province, but I'm told it's also common with Indian(first nation people) in the northern parts of Alberta.

Washington State is known for its apples, many other types of fruit, and "Northwest Cuisine" which often includes salmon as a defining ingredient.

Try this on for size...

Of course most of you have heard of Balut (duck egg, but cooked a few days before it hatches)

Here are others from the Philippines:

Lechon - spit roast pig or piglet, ofter served with a liver based gravy...sauces or lack of it determine which part of the country it's from

Dinuguan - stew made from the blood and innards of pigs

Kinilaw - seafood (normally shrimps, oysters or fish) "cooked" in vinegar and mild chillies...sorta like ceviche but with more vinegar

There are lots of others, but maybe -fad might want to chime in...

in Rochester, NY we have this thing called a "garbage plate"

Its basically two cheeseburgers with onions, mustard, and hot meat sauce over home fries, mac salad, and bakes beans with a side of bread and butter

Its not meant to be eaten for dinner but more like after a long night of drinking and you have like $5 leftover

Its not for everyone but when I was in college man it was the @#$#....people who have left after college always comeback and get a garbage plate...thats one thing they really miss because u can't get it anywhere else

also the other thing was the location of the "resturant"..called Nick Tahous

basically it was in the ghetto part of town...and its the only time where all the well to do, middle class, and ghetto thugs would come together in one place

somenights u see real pimps and 'ho'es....shady people trying to sell u stuff they just stole from somewhere

best was this one guy who had only one leg....i'd give him some money to watch my car @ the local club and when we got out...i'd see him ask people for money (bus fare so he can get home).....but get this....i would leave the club and go straight to Nick's and he was there before me everytime! ! !
