A sad story. It looks as if all are lost.

Stupid is as stupid does. No radio on the sailboat?

Coast Guard finds body amid sailboat debris

What I don't understand is Ace called his brother Sunday and asked for weather reports and told him he was in 6 foot seas. Why did the brother wait till Tuesday to see if he arrived at destination and then report the boat overdue? The person in the life jacket may have survived had he tried to call Ace back earlier and see how he was faring.

Moral of the story: Don't take your "house" boat out in rough weather.

They were traveling to Fort Myers to have the boat repaired.

Yes, I'm aware of that. Still, he apparently made a bad decision on the weather. Has the nature of these repairs been made known?

Traveling offshore in a boat in need of repair when there is an inshore route down the IntraCoastal Waterway does not seem like a wise decision.

Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission will investigate further. How much oil and gasoline do you suppose might leak from the motor and fuel tank and what impact would it likely have to wildlife and the environment? Negligible I'd expect.

Still, pretty cramped quarters for a family of four to call home for a year.
I guess the two kayaks were their dinghies for school & such.
Errr...scratch the school thought.

According to the Sarasota School District, the siblings were not registered at any Sarasota public school and they were not being homeschooled. It is not clear if the teens attended class last year.

Sad story.....for many reasons.

Not familiar with the intracoastal there but doubt you could "sail" it. May have tried to save $$ by sailing in the gulf. Just a guess though. Yes it is sad for the children.

Here's a good read....about the recklessness of the Master of the Tall ship "Bounty" who set sail down the Atlantic coast in 2012 and went to his grave in Hurricane Sandy. Sadly, a female member of the crew also lost her life. 14 others in the crew were rescued.
