Grandpa Walgamuth Montana Cowboy

This picture of my Grandpa Ernie was taken in Montana around 1910. I was always captivated by it. My first cousin Chris was too and now lives in Montana, so he set out to find the place it was taken. He also found a postcard from my grandma to Ernie before they were married sent to Montana. So in searching about Chris found the road the ranch was on and found the bunkhouse my grandpa probably slept in survives. He took this picture from a slightly different angle but the bump on the center peak identifies this as the same mountains that Grandpa sat in front of.

Fun stuff!

Ah yes, I recognize the place. That'd be the elusive "Crystal Clear Mountain" range. It's hard to pin point its exact location on the map and it's one of the few places there are no GoogleMap pictures.

You sure about this? The sole picture in Tom's post is clearly the Studebaker Mountain Range.

I wonder if Grandpa had a pistol on the other side?

Probably not. Montana is long gun country.

Does the postcard say he was going threshing?

I all too well remember the threshing on my uncles large farm in my youth. The large belt driven thresher being fed from a dozen horse pulled wagons.

Rural electrification programs had not got to them yet. Perhaps just slower to arrive in Canada is another memory.

Dad remembered the electrification so I imagine it happened in the thirties.

Well not quite the thirties. Rural electrification of the Dakota's, Montana even rural Iowa and Minnesota, didn't happen until the very late 1940's to the mid 50's. I know cause I lived out there. It was often very dark!
