The stinkiest (alleged) food in the world
Surströmming, a fermented Baltic Sea herring concoction is said to be the worst smelling, and perhaps worst tasting food in the world. I've heard Garrison Keillor and crew go on about the odd smell and texture of lutefisk, another Swedish/Norse dish. I've not had either but being parts Swedish, Norwegian, and Finnish I'm curious about the sort of fare that sustained my ancestors all those years. I've put both on my dark side bucket list.

Could be that such things don't stink so bad in sub zero temps.
You know people are living in a hard tough ol' place if they have to rely on that sort of stuff to stay alive.

Durian fruit...the Gem of S.E. Asia...cant say I have smelled anything worse than this...the locals love it..I cant be in the same room with it.
In fact..it is prohibited from being carried on the city busses.

Handkäse (Hand Cheese), can get pretty stinky, especially when it warms up, and it is on the ripe side. Add caraway seeds and/or pickled thin sliced onion and some oil ("Musik"), slice it on some hearty German Rye bread, and you've got a good meal. Order a Beer too!

In high school one of my group of pals was real particular about his VW beetle he'd restored. It was an early one somebody'd brought back from Germany. Canvas sunroof and turn signal semaphores, etc.
On a prank, we smeared Limburger Cheese all over his heater manifold.
