Its not actually Mercedes doing. This is a federal program that Mercedes was the first manufacturer to implement. It makes it a pain in the ass to order theft relevant parts and I have to sign a federal form every time I install one. Smart keys are even worse than other TRP parts. They will only sell you a key if all your paperwork is in order and the car is present, ie you have to tow the car to the dealer if you lose the key(s)

Other manufacturers will have to get on the bandwagon within a few years.

Its what happens when the little smart key fails to work over the cars life span .It should be guarenteed to function properly for the life span of the car ,if not Im calling over engineered for profit gains only.Ive seen some 2005 era c280 s practically been given away due to the effort and cost some owners had to put up with in getting a new key .
