Cat and Mouse
 

I take care of 3 Feral /Alley Cats 2 were born under my house and one of them is almost like a pet (Cutie )and occasionally sleeps on out Bed the other 2 stay outside. Note all of them also hunt and eat natural food.
I generally feed them inside the so I leave the back door open.

I am sitting at my Computer in the Bedroom and Cutie comes charging in (I thought something was chasing her) and jumps on the Bed. Then I noticed she had a Mouse in her mouth.

I did not want her to eat the mouse on the bed and got up to grab her and take her out. Cutie likely thought I was going to take her Mouse and tried to get away resulting in her dropping the Mouse which still alive ran a cross the Bed and jumped into the Clothing Hamper where I was sure I saw it squeeze between one of the holes in the Hamper.

So I figured the Mouse got away and I was stuck having a Mouse in the house. I tried to get Cutie to sniff around or listen for the Mouse bit that did not work seemed like she was pissed off at me.

After awhile I realized I should check the clothing Hamper. I could not take it out side as it was raining so I took it to the living room. I dumped the Hamper and that darn Mouse was mixed in with the clothing and ran off under the furniture. Where there was no way to get at it. So now I am still stuck with a mouse.

Mice are cute till they star peeing and defecting on everything.

At one time I had some no-kill mouse traps but I am not sure where they are and they of course only work if the Mouse gets into the trap.

Does anyone know any type of bait that is sure fire to attract Mice to the Trap?

Around here mice seem to like McDonalds French fries for their last meal.

Peanut butter, American cheese and have used Power Bar, I forget what flavor.

Not sure how humane those sticky traps are... The worse was one got in just before breakfast, put it in a bag, but not ready to dispose in the can outside. Got sick of it screaming while eating breakfast, so spun the bag until quiet. After that, Dad uses the electric shock traps (no risk of touching it or getting yourself sticky) and those plug in repellents that use sound.

At my home, the feral cats in the car port roof keep the mice away. Totally feral and I don't feed them. I know they work, as twice they were scared away by the dogs (decided to have an all out cat fight in my back garden), the gnawing came back. Tried the mint trick and seemed to work.

Honestly, I would never ever let a mouser in my home: too much risk.

Power Bar?; Mice are fast enough on normal food.

I was appalled by the instructions on the sticky traps that said to pick it up and through the suck Mouse into the garbage.

I left the window on my Van open and some nice cat peed on the seat so I am not interested in allowing Cats in my Car. I have had mice in the house only 2 times since 1977 and it was due to a unpatched hole in the wall from a plumbing job I did.

The number of feral in are area has decreased. Likely because of drought for the last 3 years. When I went for walks I used to see lots of Gopher mounds and occasionally Cats waiting by them (I used to see the Momma Cat bringing dead Gophers to feed the ones born under my house so I guess it was one of their staples). Since the drought there is frew Gopher mounds and less Cats.
When My Cats got older they also contiuned to eat Gophers when they could get them. I would find some portion of the Head left over from that. But, have not found that for well over a year now.

I managed to find one of my traps that is pictured in the thumbnail.

Tipping towards the Door the weight of the trap hold the door open. When the Mouse gets far enough inside the trap tips and the door closes and a plastic spring locks the door.

The trap works but there is a human issue you have to deal with. The trap is heavy enough that you can't tell if the Mouse is inside or not and you are tempted to open the door to take a look.
If you do that be sure to do it outside because the Mouse is going to shoot out of the opening.

I think they should have made the main body of the trap out of clear plastic so you can see if something is inside. Perhaps there is some scientific reason not to do that.
I know if I don't cover my Cat carrier so no light gets in the Cats will struggle to get out so I am guessing if the Mouse trap was clear plastic the Mouse might also struggle to get out.

like most posters typed, peanut butter was irresistible for the few in our attic a few years ago ...

My dog is half husky and I wish he had inherited this ability. Instead his only kills are birds sleeping in my backyard on a low lying tree. He's gotten two of those.

Comment on feral Cats.

Lots of people don't like them but I live in an urban area and I did not know there was Rats around (I thought Down Town in the larger buildeig) till one of my Cats had one.

It makes you wonder just how many rodents would be around if there were no feral Cats to eat them.

They also eat Lizards and some Bugs.
