300SL Gullwing Replica - Not bad!
Seems like it's based on a R170 SLK32 AMG. 350+ horsepower, yes please!
1955 Replica/Kit Makes mercedes benz 300sl gullwing | eBay Having driven an SLK230 and a 300SL Gullwing, I think this car would certainly make for a pretty cool, fun daily driver!

One thing that blares at me, other than how cool it would be to own...the side windows are stationary, where the originals, if I remember correctly, popped out to be stowed away elsewhere. If those are truly stationary in the replica, there's no way I could drive it, since I am one of those that drives with the window down a hair all year round, including winter time driving.

Door sills are pretty high. Remove the door completely.

I am sure they were trying to recreate it 100%, but the door sills are high and wide because in the track cars the fuel tanks were in there. This helped to balance the car over the long race.
But since the tanks were in there a regular door would not work. It would be too wide to open. So the gullwing design was the answer to how do you open the door when there is no room for it to swing out? And the entrance space is small as it is. A thin swing out door would have made that space even smaller. |

Wonder how Mercedes feels about this one. They're sticklers about not allowing replicas of the 300 SL owing to it being copyrighted art. They've crushed the body of a seized replica before in Germany.

The body looks pretty grand. Too bad the interior is modern and the wheels.

I thought the high door sill was to allow for the space frame The car for all intents and purposes has no chassis to otherwise to speak of. The car may not have done well in accidents.
Strange one is a couple used to drive through here yearly with a low to mid thirties Studebaker or Hudson convertible coupe. Beautiful car. Stopped by a few times. His complaint was almost everyone thought it was a kit car. I was younger then so they were a nice older couple at the time. It had a modern drivetrain but everything else was probably original. Or at least looked it. |
