Road Trip .... suggestions

We are planning a road trip from DFW to Niagara Falls. So far we are thinking about stops in Memphis, Nashville, Winston-Salem, Williamsburg, Harrisburg, Niagara, Detroit and St. Louis.

We are trying to break the trip in to driveable bites. We are thinking that Mem would just be a 1/2 day to see Graceland and then head off to Nashville. Same thing there. May be a 1/2 day to see the Opry then head off. Maybe 1 day in Winston, 2 in Williams, 2 in Harris, 2 or 3 in Niagara, 1 in Detroit and 1 or 2 in St Louis. We have 2 weeks.

Neither of us have been to any of these locations so we are not really sure what there is to see.

Any advise or suggestions?

While in Memphis, go downtown and eat ribs at The Rendezvous.

First of all, you should bring your passport, because the best view of the falls is from the Canadian side. In the old days, you could just drive across but they require passports now. I wouldn't spend more than a day or two there.

If you or your entourage are interested in art or architecture, a stop at the Roycroft sites in and around Buffalo is worthwhile:

The Roycroft Inn

There are three Frank LLoyd Wright museums in the vic. of Pittsburgh:

If you like industrial stuff, it's a short detour to the Corning Glass museum in Corning, NY:

And there's the Rock n Roll hall of fame in Cleveland:

If you go through Dayton OH, catch the Air Force Museum. It's always on my list. Been there many times.

If you go through Kentucky, catch a bourbon distillery tour. Plenty of them.

If you make it to Niagara Falls, take a little detour to see the Welland Canal. If you're lucky you can catch a ship transiting the locks.

A visit to the Indianapolis motor speedway is well worth a few hours if you are a car guy. Be sure and see the basement too. I think they have or at least had a mercedes 300 SLR there.

Detroit? Seriously? I can say that, it my hometown.

A couple things come to mind. If you are into the fine arts, the Detroit Institute or Arts is a world class museum. The Henry Ford museum (Dearborn actually, but it's close) has a good car collection and all kinds of interesting machines up to a very large steam locomotive - a 4-6-6-4 if memory serves. The adjacent Greenfield Village is Henry Fords collection of interesting buildings relocated to one spot, including Thomas Edisons lab, the Wright brothers cycle shop, that kind of thing. If you want to see how the other half lived, take a tour of the Edsel & Eleanor Ford house in Grosse Pointe.

Eat a coney dog or White Castle while there, but only one. Don't want to risk your health too much, ya know.

The Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio is a must stop on your trip. There is none larger or with as much stuff. I've been through it at least 50-60 times in my life, and find something different each visit...it changes quite a bit.

Drive over to Pittsburgh and visit Point State Park and the oldest surviving building in Pittsburgh, the Ft Pitt Blockhouse of 1764. Lots of history there. While in Pittsburgh, stop over in the Strip District for some great food. Primanti Brothers has some of the best sandwiches west of NYC.

From Pittsburgh, it's a couple hours drive North to the Falls. We went in 2011, and again in 2015 on day trips.

If you decide to stop in Pitt, let me know...my wife and I would be happy to have lunch with you, and take you over to Mt Washington for a ride on the Duquesne Incline. The view from Mt Washington of the city is breathtaking. Pittsburgh has one of the most beautiful skylines of any large city I've seen.
