Ironic?
Just saw a commercial on the idiot tube for the Fox network's presentation of the Miss USA pageant. I thought it was pretty funny that Fox chose the song "American Woman" as background music. Not only is the song done by a Canadian group (The Guess Who) but it was an anti-American song protesting the USA's militaristic stance during the Vietnam conflict era.
Those idjits at Fox astound me. Wouldn't a better choice have been "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison?

In their defense I doubt the person(s) who made the decision were even alive when the song was written much less eve her the song before they started to look for a song to fit the advertisement. I doubt they even red the lyrics tot he song. Last, the people who watch FOX, MSNBC or what have you would not even grasp much less be bothered by what the song is saying. It's a catchy rock and roll tune form the '70's.
I listen to music for the back ground noise. I would have a hard time placing an artist with a song. The songs I know the lyrics too I could count on 1 hand and the only way I kind of know the lyrics is if the music is playing and I can lip sync (and even then I'll screw it up). As for the meaning of a song ... I could not tell you any that I looked into. I may or may not remember this conversation beyond tomorrow. You and my brother in law could have great conversations about music all day long on the other hand.

I have been married to the fantastic and beautiful Mrs. Idle for some years now. She was once an actress that retired after we married.
She is much younger than me. We get a lot of looks that seem to suggest the looker is thinking, "Who'se the Babe with the old Geezer?" Or, "Is that his niece?" But with all that being said.... I can't think of an instance where I would want an American Woman to 'stay away from me'. Or for an 'American woman, won't you let me beeeeeee?" 'Go, gotta get away.' Nope, that also will not fit. Perhaps they could not secure the rights to Roy's song? Another of his songs, 'Anything you want' would also have worked. |

I always liked the song but never realized back in the day it was anti American. Who would have guessed it of the guess who?

Reminds me of a commercial for the Saturn sky back when it came out in 06/07 - they used a song (albeit the instrumental part) written about a car crash. But hey I guess it worked on me.
