Anybody knowledgeable on buying a cab and chassis?

I'm thinking of upgrading my Dodge to a newer one. I like my flat bed and am wondering if there is worth in trying to buy a cab and chassis and switch over my flat bed?

I just priced one out and it said I could get something a lot like what I have for around $33,000 with rebates and such.

That doesn't seem too bad.

Is there a market for a used cab and chassis--your old truck? Or would you trade it in?

I think there is a strong market for good used Dodges with the Cummins in any form. A trade is a possibility though. Depends on what deal I can get.

Would it be cheaper to buy a truck with the bed in place, then sell the components that you don't need?

Maybe. It's not clear so far.

Parts pricing is ridiculous these days. My 2017 Explorer has a chrome-plated plastic strip which runs across the rear hatch. Ford would like $500 for this part. I can't imagine what a new OEM pickup truck tailgate with all fitted hardware costs these days.

If you just want to get a work truck and put a bed on it , then go for it. They are usually bare bones but some people like them like that. At $33k, It's not a lot for a diesel pickup.

I have been looking for a late 90s Dodge diesel PU with a manual. The asking prices for rusted out junk with >250k is usually around $9,000.00. That is for four wheel drive, but still crazy numbers so you should get over a third of the 33K easily depending on miles.

I borrowed 14K on it a year or so back, so the value is very strong.

I'm now thinking strongly of keeping what I have. It has a new trans, diff, shocks and clutch not to mention michelin tires and newish brakes. Its still pretty presentable with no rust on the body. I think I'll add a backing camera and possibly nav.

The new ones are pretty lavish with their fine looking leather seats though.

I found an 08 with 15K miles on it for 33K. Seems nice but has crank windows. .no power sets, cloth interior and a very ugly black plastic front.

Are you still towing? $33k is the base price for a brand-new 2017 Ram 3500 chassis cab 4x2 with no options and the 6.4 gas V8. I have to imagine that some pricing discounts are available.

yes I am still towing.

I tried to price out a cab and chassis on the web but I really don't want a one ton, though I suppose a single tire would be ok. I can remove some leafs in back if it rides too rough.

I'm coming round to the idea of just keeping mine. Hanging in there and fixing the clutch correctly, installing a backing camera and GPS. Heck, maybe I'll paint it too!

Many years ago, I bought a Dodge one ton dually for the purpose of putting on a flat bed. This was in the early nineties. At that time, I could buy a dually pickup for less money than a cab and chassis. The outfit that sold and installed the flat bed, gave me almost as much for the new dually bed as I paid for the very nice flat bed with tool boxes underneath on each side. IIRC, the dually had a slightly wider rear track than the cab and chassis. Hope this helps.
