W124 300TE Loss of Equal steering radius Left vs Right
I have a Mercedes W124 300TE.
Prior to my resealing the PS/SLS Pump due to leaks I noticed that the car fairly suddenly would not turn as sharply to the left as to the right; 3/4 turns of the wheel left is all I get vs 1-1/2 turns to the right. I figured the power steering pressure was super low due to the failing pump and that the turn radius would be back to normal following a successful rebuild. I rebuilt/resealed the Vickers Tandem Power Steering/Hyraulic Pump. The process went pretty smoothly. I replaced the high pressure PS hose from the PS pump to the steering gear also. It's all back together, steering is super easy, zero noise, groans or leaks. But the car still will not turn left as sharply. With the car on blocks, wheels removed, engine not running the steering is super easy due to no load of the car weight. I get 3/4 turn of the steering wheel to the left then it hits the end of travel and it feels and sounds like the bump at the end of travel is coming from where steering wheel shaft meets the steering gear not from the letf bump stop (it never gets that far). The infringment of travel is not from some other steering linkage component, either. I replaced it all in 2016. It has been tight and perfect for over a year. Turning of the steering wheel to the right is normal with about 1-1/2 turns of the steering wheel then stops due to the bump stop on the steering knuckle. The car drives straight no veering, no trammeling, wandering shaking nothing. The steering gear does not have any noticable leaking of PS Fluid either. The car just does not turn left very sharp right now. Question: Why? Did my running of the system with low power steering fluid level and or pressure cause damage to the steering gear. Is there a limit to how many rotations the steering wheel can make and somehouw the center just got re-set? My next step is to disconnect the steering wheen shaft from the steering gear then I'l know. In the mean time any thought out there? |
