United Says Goodbye To Its Iconic 'Queen Of The Skies'
I think United the last US carrier to fly 747's. Kind of sad. I remember the first time I set foot on one. She was such a graceful and elegant plane. Only other commercial airplane that I can think of that appeals to me the same way is the Connie.

It's the passing of an era to be sure. I've only made four trips on a 747 in my life. First time I visited the USA as a tourist back in 93 and when my wife and I went to England a few years ago courtesy of BA. One think that always freaked me out about them was it always felt to me like they were going too slow to lift off.

The first 747 I saw was in 1970 taking off from the airport in Barcelona. The plane was so large it looked like it was going impossibly slow and like a feather it just lifted gently off the ground and climbed away.

The very first flight on an airplane I took was on a 747 from Chicago to San Francisco. I was headed to Fort Ord, California for basic training. It was a midnight flight and the stewardesses were super attentive to me when they found out where I was going. Man, that was living! They kept me topped up with drinks, food and company. I thought, "Hey, this flying ain't so bad after all!".
Upon landing I was transferred to a "puddle jumper" for the flight to Monterrey. I swear that plane was so small the pilot turned it by leaning as you would on a motorcycle. Never recovered from the "willies" of the second flight. To this day the wife has to pry my finger tips from the armrests of whatever flight we take.

In the Houston Skyline a 7 4 7 made a certain siloutte in the sky ,by night it was its roar that got you to look up.Living 10 miles from one of the biggest airports in the U.S. you got to see alot of departures and approaches ,both were like seeing a locomotive in the sky . Seeing one coming in on approach from a distance at night was part of a night activity for us kids . I Forgot all about this til now.

First time I saw a 747 was when one flew into (then) Jan Smuts in Johannesburg in '71.
Best time I had flying in one was in high school, Bangkok to Copenhagen in 76, when First Class still meant private upper lounge, and a lot of expat classmates were heading home. We took over the lounge, the crew stayed downstairs... |

bring back the ATL Carvair, or convert remaining 747s to the purpose.

Just came back from a job at the Mojave Airport Boneyard, spent three days between 747's, C130's and Saab fighter jets. I took some amazing images but unfortunately because of a NDA I had to sign I'm not in the liberty to share them on the net.
747's are lined up for at least half a mile, mostly stripped of their engines. When the winds pick up, up to 100mph, the wind will slightly airbone the planes and move them, what's visible by the damage on the wing tip. There are much more planes parked there now then in the pictures from 1990 and 2003. The Mojave Airport Boneyard | Lost America
